About

I am an advanced pianist and former band director, offering lessons online or in the comfort of your home in the greater Kalamazoo area. With over 30 years of experience teaching private piano and band instrument lessons, I have had the pleasure of working with over 40 students a week, teaching individuals of all ages, from 6 to 100. I hold a bachelor’s degree in music education from Western Michigan University, and my extensive experience allows me to provide a high level of instruction tailored to your needs.

I offer student-centered lessons, meaning I personalize the learning experience to match your goals and interests. If you prefer not to use a traditional lesson book, I’m happy to adapt the lesson to suit your learning style. My lessons are structured and sequential, yet flexible and customized to fit you. For example, if you're an adult joining a band and want to focus solely on your music, that’s absolutely possible. Likewise, if you have a young child who thrives on a more structured curriculum, I can provide that as well.

In addition, I am the owner of Thompson Tutoring School of Music, where we have over 15 instructors and more than 250 students taking lessons. If I’m unavailable for lessons, I’m happy to recommend one of my highly qualified instructors who can provide top-notch instruction.

We used Thompson Tutoring for our middle schooler who was struggling in math. The tutor conveniently came to our home and was amazing. Not only did my child begin to immediately grasp concepts he was struggling with at school, but his confidence soared. Thank you, Thompson Tutoring, for pairing us with Jeff. We couldnt be more pleased.

    Frequently asked questions

I create lessons around student interest and parent expectations. I like to balance using a lesson book and music that is in the student's interest. Lessons are weekly during the same time slot. Lessons are usually scheduled for 30 minutes, but can be expanded for longer. I also teach adults. With their lessons, I work on developing a tailored lesson to learn songs they would like to play.

I have a bachelor's in music from Western Michigan University. I was a band director and am an advanced pianist. I can teach all band instruments up to the college level. I have been teaching private lessons for over 30 years and can teach any style and adapt any song so that the student can learn to play it at their level.

I graduated with a music education degree and began teaching music directly after graduating from college.

All ages!  All abilities! I teach 6-year-olds though 105-year-olds.

We held a student concert at a senior living home to give back to the community. The seniors were able to interact with the student performers! The students were able to share a gift of music for the holidays!
Identify Your Goals: Clarify what you want to achieve with your lessons. Are you looking to improve technical skills, learn a specific genre, or work on performance? Knowing your goals will help you find a teacher whose teaching style and expertise align with your needs. Teaching Style: Every teacher has a different approach. Some may focus on theory, others on practical skills, or perhaps they emphasize creativity. It’s important to find someone whose teaching methods resonate with you. Patient and Supportive: The best teachers foster a supportive learning environment. A good teacher will be patient, encouraging, and responsive to your needs and progress, helping you feel comfortable and motivated. Communication and Availability: Find someone who is responsive to communication and has availability that fits your schedule. It’s crucial to have open, clear communication to ensure a positive and productive student-teacher relationship.
Be sure to tell your teacher upfront what music style you would like to learn. Let them know the specific genres or techniques you’re interested in so they can tailor the lessons to meet your goals. Also, communicate how much time you’re able to commit to practicing between lessons. This will help your teacher understand your availability and set realistic expectations for your progress.
