About
Photography is both a science and an art. Understanding the principles of photography is the basis for effectively communicating with the image. Each lesson is tailored to the student's individual needs to help them progress. I help them work toward reaching their photographic goals.
Photography is always amazing to me. I am semi retired, but still doing some work for clients. I was an USAF photojournalist for four years. I was a independent contractor for the Kalamazoo Gazette for almost 20 years. I was the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra photographer for 25+ years. I was awarded the Communicator of the Year award by Inter-Com, the local communications professional group. My photos have appeared in numerous magazines and on line publications. I like to shoot a variety of subjects; people, travel, nature, documentary and sports. Check out my FB page, John Lacko Photography

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I try to tailor my instruction to the needs of the students based on their stated goals before we start. For beginning students, I first insure they understand their equipment and know how to use it. Then we move on to the basics of photography. Next we introduce the type of photography they are interested in. The common techniques and skills for that type are next. I then show them examples of that type and explain how what they are seeing is done. If appropriate to the class, I give assignments due one week later when we critique their work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was a photojournalist in the U. S. A. F. for four years. I have studied with Ernst Haas, Charles Harbutt, Gary Winogrand and other noted photographers. My masters degree is in Educational Technology. I was an independant photo contractor for the Kalamazoo Gazette for almost 20 years. I have won numerous awards for my photos
