Hello prospective art students. My name is James Fryer and I would enjoy teaching you basic art skills or assisst you in enhancing your talents. I have taught art Kindergarten through 12th grade for the past 25 years in Grand Rapids Public Schools. I have also taught painting classes at retirement communities and at various churches. My degrees are in Art, History and Social Studies, and I presently teach at the new Museum School in Grand Rapids. I'm excited about meeting you and your parents at your art lessons. I have also sold some of my own sculptures and have had an ink drawing as an ArtPrize entry a few years ago.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will ask the student what it is that they wish to accomplish, and with that information I can formulate a set of lessons to accomplish that goal. Parents of K-12 students are welcome to sit in on the lessons. Adult students are also welcome.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching fine art for 25 years in the Grand Rapids Public Schools district.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons for K-5th grade are 30 minutes for $30.
Lessons for 6-12th grade and Adults are 45 minutes for $35.
Advanced students 9-12th grade and Adults are 60 minutes for $45.
How did you get started teaching?
My undergrad degree is in Art Education. I planned on being a teacher ever since I was in 11th grade. I was hired as an Art teacher the year after graduation and have been teaching ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many diverse student populations, regular and special education students, and from five years of age to 95.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Check their credentials and their amount of experience, and make sure you will have fun while learning.
