Hello, my name is Katherine Mekis. I am a music therapist as well as a music teacher. I have a bachelors in music therapy and masters in early childhood education. Currently I teach flute, piano, guitar, and adapted music lessons. I have more than 20 years experience working with both special education and typically developing students. What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to meet with the student and assess their current skill level. Together we discuss what their goals are. I will then suggest music books that would best for them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
i have a bachelors degree in music therapy and a master degree in early childhood education. I have worked with students with special needs for more then 20 years. I have taught typically developing students for 25 years.
How did you get started teaching?
As a music major I wanted to share my gift of music by teaching young students. At that time I began teaching private music lessons.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with both children with special needs as well as typically developing students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would suggest they meet with the perspective teacher to see if they are a good fit. Ask the teacher what their policy's are and what experience they have.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Does my parent have to stay? What are your studio policies? Can I ask to play specific music?
