Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process working with students starts with getting to know what their career or education interests are. Knowing your personal, professional and technical goals will help me get to preparing a lesson plan specific to your needs faster. Getting you hands on during lessons and knowing you are practicing on your own with confidence is my goal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I attended many photography specific programs early in my career that focused on composition, lighting and darkroom also traditional art classes which help in color, composition, architectural strucure and design. I have taught photography and film, darkroom and photoshop over the years at schools and community programs as well as individual lessons.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching at city based community centers wit photography students. I also taught at public schools and art galleries with students learning photography and darkroom. I worked for LA film connection teaching directing and camera operation for DSLR and Full size ENG Video cameras.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students on every level. I have had programs with kids as yourg as 5th and 6th graders, high schoolers, college studets and adults. i have created curriculums for all levels as well as specific lessons for individuals who want to learn only certain aspects about their equipment or expertise in specific areas.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was the only photographer hired to document a historic artwork installation for the City of Detroit. a 30 x 30 foot fresco painting by an artist who was trained by Deigo Rivera's assistant was creating on e of the largest fresco paintings since Deigo created the work ar the Detroit Institute of Art. i shot thousands of photos as well as video and timelapse video of the entire process which took 9 month to shoot, film and edit. It's always fun to be a part of a historic project.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who has the specific expertise you are looking for but also make sure they are versatile in other areas. The more verse they are in a range of areas they will be able to give advise based on experience rather than second hand knowledge. I have worked with all types of cameras, lighting, subjects, environments. I have worked in fashion, sports, documentary, food, landscape shooting on every type of film and digital camera and i have owned all types of cameras. Todays photographers have to think in terms of whats coming (or coming back) in the future for them as well as working with todays technology. Thinking as an artist and expanding your mind to grow.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you want to learn specifically (equipment wise), what do you want to know when lessons are over (whats in your written notes from lessons), what area of photography is of most importance to shoot, whats a strategy to getting to my goal,
