Bethany Summersgill
About
I offer flute/piccolo/baroque flute lessons for students of all ages and levels. My teaching style is strongly influenced by the Suzuki philosophy. I focus on nurturing a positive growth mindset and analytical problem solving skills as I help students build not only musical mastery, but also confidence as learners. I work with students to develop a variety of skills, including sight-reading, rhythm, ear training, beautiful tone, musicianship, and ensemble playing skills. I organize regular performance events for my students.
I teach in my home studio in St. Paul near the Cretin exit from 94 (zip code 55104), which is about halfway between Minneapolis and St. Paul downtowns. Students must be willing to come to my location. I teach occasional online lessons in certain circumstances (e.g. illness or transit issues), but prefer most lessons to be in-person.
Having private lessons with an expert on their instrument enables students to develop their musical skills and mastery in a much deeper way than through band participation alone (where the main focus is on building ensemble playing skills), and it helps them to have a more fulfilling experience in ensembles.
I hold undergraduate and graduate degrees in flute performance and have extensive experience as a performer in ensembles such as the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, South Dakota Symphony, and several active chamber groups. I have pursued a variety of pedagogy training to build a broad repertoire of teaching techniques, and I have experience working with students who have special needs.
