Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I find out what they've done, what it looks like, how much they know and if they know what they like. That tells me what I need to know to point them in the right direction.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold and MFA in Painting, Drawing and Art History and have taught at many intitutions and art centers in Minnesota as well as other parts of the country.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I teach a class, maximum size 8 students. Each class is 8 weeks long and costs $360.
How did you get started teaching?
My firs job was as Teaching Associate at the University of Minnesota Studio Arts Department.
What types of students have you worked with?
All adults from all walks of life. I have helped complete novices to mid career artists.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Every year I participate in an outdoor painting event in Greand Marais, MN called Plein Air Grand Marais. It's held in September when the weather starts to turn and the fall season gets into full swing. Through the years I have made many friends and enjoy the camaraderie.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who exhibits a knowledge of art history. That wisdom will not only help you with your own journey in perusing the craft of painting, but will also ernrich your overall life, giving you reason to travel, visit museums, read and experiement.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
You are placing your trust in an instuctor. So the most important question a student should think about is "does that person posess enough knowledge and experience to take me where I want to go?"
