Hali Fieldman, Musician
About
I'm a musician. I trained as a flutist and played professionally for a number of years on the east coast, especially in the Baltimore-Washington DC area. I taught extensively, with classes at Peabody Preparatory and the Bryn Mawr School for Girls; I also had a large private studio with students at the beginning level through high school and pre-conservatory. I played with a wonderful guitarist, with a professional chamber orchestra, with an excellent regional orchestra, a professional woodwind quintet, and more. Following a master's degree in performance at Eastman, my hands began gradually to wear out, and I no longer am able to play professionally, though I continue to coach. But my long-term interest in music theory led me to a Ph.D. in that discipline from the University of Michigan, and after short-term teaching stints at a number of institutions, including Oberlin, Harvard, and NEC, I took a permanent job at UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, where I teach a wide range of mostly graduate-level classes in music theory. As 2017 begins, I begin my 18th year in this job. While I'm not a composer, I've worked very closely with a number of composers, including as a teacher, and both my playing and my scholarly work as a theorist are deeply informed by my interest in compositional process and musical meaning.
I teach music. I'd love to hear from you.
