About this pro

In this instant gratification world of digital photography, do you wish you could create images that translate with what you see in your "minds eye"? You can see the image there, but you just don't know how to tell your camera to make it happen!

During this in-depth photography workshop learn how to create stunning images that get attention with this workshop from Nichols & Company Photography.

Professional Photographer and Instructor Matt Nichols has 24+ years of photography experience, over 20 years as a full-time photographer and lectured to all levels of photography students from beginners, hobbyists and semi-professionals and has taught college course / level classes at a local University.

Matt has extensive years of knowledge in all aspects of photography, Photoshop workflows and lightroom techniques. He has taught group workshops as well as 1 on 1 lessons and looks forward to helping you grow your photography skills in a simple and easy way that just clicks!

I love helping students of all levels learn new and different ways of seeing photography. When I first got into photography as a student in high school I has several mentors, professional photographers who encouraged me and teach me techniques that I still use to this day when I shoot. I want to give back in the same way they helped me. I am an open photography book my students can ask me anything! They will learn more from me in 2 hours than watching 20 hours of Youtube videos. :)

Excellent instruction and lesson structure. I am a complete beginner in the photography field, and Matt helped me build a foundation for learning and honing my photography skills. I would recommend anyone needing/wanting to learn photography to work with Matt. I will definitely be taking another class in the future.

Matt was amazing. My grandson wants to be a wildlife photographer so we met at the zoo for a lesson. Matt not only helped us pick out an appropriate camera but was very patient and attentive, making this experience amazing and encouraging for my grandson. I plan on continuing my grandsons photography lessons with Matt. I really hit the jackpot when I found Matt. My grandson is so excited to do another lesson. I don’t think he has put his camera down since his lesson. Thank you so much Matt for everything.

Matt was great... he taught me several new things that I thought I knew about my camera and didn't! A few hours was not quite enough. I need to spend more time with him, but haven't had time to yet. I will definitely be back for another one on one class! Highly recommend!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Workshops on using your DSLR camera and Photoshop include easy to replicate techniques that you can practice every time you pick up your camera or edit at your computer. Including:

  • Hands-on photo class covers all camera exposure controls, ISO, aperture / shutter speeds, color balance, image composition and more!
  • Discover different types of available light and how to see, bend and use it to your advantage.
  • Also learn how focus works, depth of field and lens selection can make a difference in your final compositions.
  • The use of OCF (On camera flash) and studio strobes, reflectors and scrims in outdoor photography will also be discussed.
  • Bring your computer or flash drive with your own images on it for a critique and sit down and learn photoshop and or brush up on Lightroom techniques. Learn how to use the clone tool to remove distracting opbjects, selection masks and retouch skin and clean up portraits that will pop.
  • BYO camera equipment, camera manual, notebook to instructors downtown photography studio for workshop

WHen contacting for a workshop or lesson please make a list of topics you'd like to learn or review. Some topics from better in-camera capture onlocation to Photoshop and Lightroom techniques might be better broken into a couple of classes giving student / teacher more time to go over each type in more detail and be les rushed. Matt will customize each lesson based on the individual students needs. Nothing is off limits!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

How did you get started teaching?

Over the course of a few years I was contact by misc local and state colleges to come and speak to students as a professional photographer. A few of these colleges were KU, MU, UMKC, JCCC, NWMSU and UCM to name a few. Because of those lectures I mentored dozens of interns over summer breaks and during the regular school year. I found the knowledge and experience they gained while interning for me at the studio and on various client shoots was more than they were learning in "college life" and on Youtube videos. I have also has dozens and doznes of assistants and have taugh them valuable business skills including pricing, client negotiating for paid gigs and keeping paid clients happy! From all of that I decided to expand on those experiences and teach all levels of photography not to just the 20-25 year olds in college. All levels are welcome to learn from me!

What types of students have you worked with?

All levels of photograpphy skills can inquire about a 1on1 lesson included husbands and wives - both with or without kids have taken classes as a "family" (Ex: Mother / Daughter and Father / Son "date" classes) or individuals. Amatuers, hobby photographers, semi-professional looking to make the leap and full time professional photographers wanting to build a sucssessful business. I teach hands-on photography and explain things so you don't get lost in the technical details and in a way thats easy to remember. The best way to learn is to ask and then do it! I apply that to my lessons and always encourage you to shoot more and always be open to new ways of doing things. I learn from you too! #nevertooldtolearn

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Workshops may also include shooting in the field with a model at a location of your choosing OR at the studio with your model, wardrobe and props.

Class consists of 2+ hour hands on instruction including time for Q & A's. Instructor encourages any photography related questions, nothing is off limits! Make a list before class and try to stump Matt!
