I make sure the student photographer knows his or her camera and what it can do but then, after that, point out what that same person should listen and pay attention to in their heart and head. It's in this way they'll get more incredible, beautiful, unique, very salable or just enjoyable, photos.
I love that everywhere I go, whatever I do, whomever I see or don't see, there is always something TO see. Some light, some shape, some color, some shadow, some texture, always there, ready, waiting to be photographed. There is beauty all around us and things to be discovered others may well miss.

I like to start by talking with any new student to find out more about them. I want to know what their level of experience is and what their preferences are for style and subjects, all kinds of things, then go on from there to what they want to achieve.
I worked on my high school yearbook my Junior and senior years and have been photographing ever since, some 50 years.
