About
I feel I'm good at working with an individual's strengths and weaknesses to bring out their personal best. I strive for optimal technical training, balanced with the recognition that violin playing should also be rewarding & fun musically.
I've taught in the KC area since 1978. My undergrad degree is MusEd. I have a MMus and DMA coursework in violin performance.
Viola students accepted as well.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I assess current strengths and weaknesses. The strenghths are a springboard for immediate motivation & success. The areas needing improvement or advancement can be approached step by step for a solid, well-rounded foundation.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelor of music is music education.
Master of Music in Violin Performance.
All coursework completed for Doctor of Musical Arts in Violin performance.
Extensive orchestral experience.
How did you get started teaching?
I wrote an essay in 5th grade saying I wanted to teach violin. I forgot about writing it until my mom showed it to me... 10 years after I'd established my first violin studio.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types, from extremely gifted to autistic, everything in between.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a balance of technical foundation with motivating, fun musical activities. Many students struggle for years with mediocre technique, wondering why their time put into practice is not getting results.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Know that you can commit to daily practice (or at minimum 5 days/week).
It's like exercise: it's not much fun and it takes perserverence, but you'll see results and gain irreplaceable rewards when you practice as recommended by a good teacher.
