When working with new students the first thing I like to do is to set up either an in-person studio visit or an online introductory coaching session (for online students). This is a free session in which I learn a little more about the stuent's goals, experience level, and what they are hoping to get out of lessons. I then share a little about my background and explain how the program works and what they expect. If the student feels my program is a good fit for them, I will send a tuition invoice along with some initial instructional content and we'll set a date to get started!

I have taught students ages 12 - 99 for a decade+ in multiple settings.  This includes public schools, private college preparatory academies, museums, and workshops/classes through my own studio.  I am a state-certified instructor and hold an M.A. in art education from Boston University, as well as a B.S. in education from the University of Nebraska. I opened Fount Atelier of Fine Art in Lee's Summit, Missouri in the fall of 2019 to focus on teaching classical drawing and oil painting techniques.

In addition to teaching, I also hold a busy studio practice completing works for upcoming exhibitions and client commissions.  A unique aspect of Fount Atelier is that my personal studio space is shared with students which allows students to view my process in action.

Students enroll and pay tuition on a monthly basis. Tuition cost varies depending on whether or not a student is working online or in-person and the length of sessions they choose. I've created artwork for as long as I can remember and have always had a special love for classical realist work.  I developed my teaching philosphy through my study of the classical atelier system and incorporating technology, such as flipped teaching methods.  I've always maintained a studio practicing while teaching as I believe it is important to not only "talk the talk", but "walk the walk".  I started teaching in the public school system while I earned by M.A. from Boston Univeristy and eventually transitioned to running the visual art program at a college prepatory academy.  While doing this I started doing more and more private teaching on the side through my studio and community art organizations.  I developed a sequenced curriculum adapted from the 19th century French Academic system which was a big success with students and we stated to see big results.  After teaching privately on the side for several years I made the decision to open Fount Atelier of Fine Art in Lee's Summit, Missouri, applying everything I've learned along the way.

I have worked with students of all ages and ability levels.  The primary ages I work with are students age 12 on up to senior citizens.  Many students I work with have little to no prior knowledge when it comes to artistic techniques.  All I ask is that students have a positive attitude, are driven and are coachable.  I will take care of the rest!

I would encourage students to find a teacher whose work they respect and admire.  Also choose a teacher who you feel is a good fit for your personality and stick with them for a period of time.  The key to getting good results is consistency.  Also, remember that like most things in life, you get what you pay for; don't skimp if you want quality instruction.

Determine what your artistic goals are.  Where do you want to be in 6 months, a year, two years, etc.?  What type of artwork are you attracted to?  How much time can you commit to your work?  What does your budget look like?  Are you willing to take instruction and constructive feedback on your work?  Are you looking for a sequenced, structured program that you can work through or a one-off class on a specific subject?
