Hi! Stephen Lursen here!
I'm a full time artist and instructor in Charlotte NC. I earned my MFA in painting in 2012 from Winthrop University and specialize in drawing, painting, and mixed media 2D art. I regularly work in Photoshop CC and Final Cut X and teach digital art and video editing too! Please check out my website at www.stephenlursen.com and write to me with any questions at [email protected]
I enjoy painting in bright bold colors. I hope to create art that is uplifting whether I include characters or not. I enjoy painting in numerous layers and with multiple tools/media to achieve diversity, depth, and interesting elements that draw the veiwer in close. I appreciate being able to talk about the effects of color and marks, and, how and what they communicate to your veiwer, when they look at your work.
Stephen is always on time and always has a smile. He is very patient and if you don’t understand, he will explain it in different ways until you do. He is a creative artist in every way with so many ideas to offer.
Stephen Lursen is an excellent teacher. His knowledge of the art world is abounding and his patience in helping me understand is overwhelming. With his help, I have created the paintings I dreamed of doing and I thank him wholeheartedly for being who he is.
Step 1: Get to know student's skill set and goals.
Step 2: Agree on a project based curriculum to teach student new and improved skills during the production of an agreed upon work of art or design.
Step 3: Regularly evaluate execution and creative solutions to continually grow and develop.
Step 4: Once goal is met, create new goal/s and begin new projects to achieve said goal.

Director of Education at Donna Downey Studios for 4 years in Hutnersville, NC.
Standard price for art lessons is $60 per hour. I provide all art supplies necessary for every art lesson with the exception of canvases or substrates larger than 11"x14". I teach drawing and painting in a multitude of media. I also teach Photoshop CC and Final Cut X for digital creative work.
I began teaching after graduating with my Master in 2012. My first opportunity was with Donna Downey Studios in Huntersville, NC and I have taught hundreds of classes, lessons, workshops since. I also sell online workshops from my website. Online workshops are an excellent value for their hours of content and replay-ability.
I have worked with children as young as 5 and adults too. I work with some professional artists and beginners.
I was contracted by the Town of Huntersville to teach 200 walk up artists to paint during the Hello Huntersville Festival in May.
It is important to have clear goals for what you wnat to achieve. Do you have an artist who inspires you and you would like to emulate (at first) to gain those skills? This is a great way to learn and grow from a beginner level to advanced. Once skill unlocks many others.
What does the student want to achieve artistically?
Does the student want to connect their art with ecommerce or sales in some way?
Who are your favorite artists that you would love to learn to emulate as a first step?
