Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I determine what the student wants to learn within the enormous field of photography: techincal skills? aesthetic? B/W? Darkroom? Photoshop? Is there a style or genre of photography that they want to learn? Landscape? Portrait? Documentary? Photo essay?
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Applied Arts (Photography), a Master of Arts (Photogaphy) and a Master of Fine Arts (ABD) in Photogrpahy. With these 3 degrees I have taught studio and academic courses at Ringling School of Art and Design, college level courses in New York City, and multiple colleges in North Carolina and Tenessee.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
No standard pricing: I can work within a budget and my basic fees are negotiable. However, regardless of the agreement that we reach, the quality of the teaching and information remains undilluted.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a graduate as part of the scholarship I received at the University of New Mexico in 1985. I loved it ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types and ages of students, mostly beginners-- everyone intersted in camera work (technical), aesteitics, and academics (history).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Experience. Experience. Experience.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Most importantly is their willingness to ask questions. Most students are unnecessarily afraid of asking questions. There are no mistakes as a student, only a multiple opportunities to learn.
