Mr Murphy helped my son with emergency, last minute lessons to prepare for college auditions. Theyve continued the relationship into college. My son really likes him and sees the value in his teachings.

Michael is amazing with our son and has made playing the trumpet fun for our son again… when he was wanting to give up before taking lessons.

    Frequently asked questions

I begin each lesson by having the student play a selection of their choice. This helps me understand their current level and musical voice. From there, we discuss what they’re looking to improve, along with their short-term and long-term goals. Early in our work together, I introduce what I call the “Big Three”: Air, Aperture, and Embouchure — the core elements of sound production and trumpet health. Mastering these fundamentals provides a strong, lasting foundation that supports all aspects of trumpet playing. Interestingly, beginning students often grasp these concepts more quickly than those with prior school or self-directed training, as they’re typically more open to building proper habits from the start. Whether you’re starting fresh or retraining with purpose, this method helps players unlock a fuller, healthier sound—and sets them up for long-term success.
With over 27 years of experience in teaching, performing, auditioning, and studio recording, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the concepts and techniques that have helped me achieve more than I ever imagined. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and have completed over 50 credit hours toward a Master’s in Trumpet Performance at New Mexico State University. Private study has played a major role in shaping both my career and my teaching philosophy. I’ve had the privilege of learning from world-renowned artists, including Bobby Shew (international solo artist) and Don Tison (35-year principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony), among others. Their mentorship profoundly influenced my musicianship and my approach as an educator. My goal is to pass on what I’ve learned—not just to help students play better, but to help them unlock their full potential as musicians and performers.

My grandfather was a self-taught trumpet player whose style paralleled that of the great Louis Armstrong. His love for music left a lasting impression on me, and I picked up the trumpet at the age of seven. By middle school, I was already teaching lessons at a local music store—sharing the basics I was learning myself through private instruction. Teaching came naturally, and over the years, my passion for helping others grow only deepened. In 2000, I set out on a personal mission: to take my own playing to the next level. I immersed myself in study—analyzing technique, watching videos, experimenting with different approaches, and learning directly from professionals. I wanted to understand not just what worked, but why. That journey led me to a powerful realization: I could help other trumpet players reach their goals in half the time it took me, by passing on the insights and methods I worked so hard to uncover. Now, it’s my passion and purpose to teach others—not just how to play, but how to thrive as trumpet players with a strong foundation and clear direction.
I’ve had the privilege of working with students of all ages and backgrounds—from 3rd graders just picking up the trumpet to players in their 70s rediscovering their passion for music. My teaching experience includes: • 🎶 Absolute beginners just starting their musical journey • 🎓 High school and college students preparing for auditions, performances, or music degrees • 🔁 “Come-back” players returning to the trumpet after years away • 🎺 Retired professionals seeking to refine technique or explore new ideas Whether you’re learning the basics, preparing for an important performance, or just playing for the joy of it, I’ll meet you where you are—and help you get where you want to go.
One of the great honors of my career has been performing for Elevation Church’s Christmas Eve services, which are broadcast worldwide to celebrate and share the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a privilege to use my musical gifts in a way that glorifies God and reaches people across the globe with a message of hope, love, and salvation.
Taking trumpet lessons is more than just learning notes—it’s an exciting investment in yourself and your future. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistent practice, patience, and persistence, you will see real progress. The right teacher can make all the difference. That’s why I focus on building a strong connection with my students, tailoring lessons to your unique goals and learning style. Together, we’ll develop solid fundamentals, overcome challenges, and celebrate every victory—big or small. Remember, every great musician started where you are now. With dedication and the right guidance, your passion will grow stronger every day. I’m excited to help you unlock your full potential and make music a joyful part of your life! __________________________________________ 👪 A Guide for Parents: Supporting Your Child’s Music Journey Choosing to start music lessons is a wonderful gift you can give your child—one that nurtures creativity, discipline, and confidence. But it’s important to understand that lessons are an investment of time and effort for both your child and the teacher. Here’s what you can do to help your child succeed: • Encourage regular practice. Progress comes with consistent effort outside of lessons. Even short, focused daily practice sessions make a big difference. • Choose the right teacher. A good fit between teacher and student creates a positive learning environment. Look for someone with a proven track record and teaching concepts that match your child’s needs. • Be patient. Learning an instrument is a journey with ups and downs. Celebrate the small wins and encourage persistence. • Stay involved. Ask your child about their lessons, listen to their practice, and provide gentle reminders and support. With your encouragement and the right teaching approach, your child can build a lifelong love of music—and reach their goals with confidence and joy. __________________________________________ For Come Back Players 🎺 Welcome Back to Music! Whether you’re picking up the trumpet again after a break or starting fresh as an adult learner, it’s never too late to make progress and enjoy the journey. Learning or relearning an instrument takes patience, consistent practice, and the right guidance—but with those in place, you’ll find that your skills and confidence grow faster than you expect. My teaching approach is tailored to meet you where you are, respecting your experience while helping you build a strong foundation. Together, we’ll focus on technique, musicality, and goals that matter most to you—whether that’s playing for fun, joining a community band, or preparing for a special performance. Remember, music is about joy and personal growth, no matter your age or skill level. I’m excited to help you rediscover your passion and achieve your musical dreams.
