About

I have been drawing and watercolor painting for the past 25 years. My concentration is in still life and portraiture. I do commission work in addition to teaching. My formal training is an Associates Degree in Fine art.

I have been teaching drawing and watercolor for the past 9 years to people of all ages and backgrounds. Seeing their progression makes me smile every day!

My husband and I built a new home and half of the upstairs is dedicated to my art studio. It's flooded with light and is a perfect place to be creative. In my studio, I teach private and group classes in drawing and watercolor. I try to keep things light and fun but at the same time productive.

I would love to share my passion with you in a nurturing and non-judgmental environment.

I love teaching others the skills needed to draw and paint. Watching my students' progression unfold is rewarding and makes my day every time! Drawing is a skill that can be learned, just like learning to write letters and numbers.

I had the privilege of studying under Kathy Flood for 2 years. We focused on many different paint mediums but focused primarily on watercolor and the techniques necessary to produce high quality and realistic artwork. At every stage Kathy was able to answer my questions and challenge my abilities and take me to the next level. It was exciting seeing the results of different brushes, paper and even quality of paints. These lessons have had a tremendous positive effect on the quality and quantity of my painting. Kathy is always friendly and a joy to have as a teacher. I highly recommend her skills as a teacher and mentor.

Kathy is very talented. She is very patient and responsive to the needs and desires of her students. To that end, she was willing to develop and plan lessons on a weekly basis for me.

    Frequently asked questions

In my private lessons, I will evaluate the skill level of the student and then tailor my lessons to meet the needs of that student.

I have an Associates in Fine Arts and have been working in graphite and watercolor for the past 25 years.   I have taught drawing and watercolor to adults and children at Cape Fear Studios and in my home studio in Chapel Hill, NC.

I charge $s40/hour for private lessons.  Supplies are not included.

I started teaching some neighborhood children and my business grew from word of mouth.  Then I became a member of Cape Fear Studios and taught numerous children and adults to draw and paint in private and group classes.

I work with children 8 years of age and above and adults.

I developed a class called “Drawing for the Fun of It” where I taught children basic drawing skills. I enjoyed guiding the children in drawing cartoons, anime and traditional subjects.

My advice would be to look at the work of the artist.  If the work speaks to the student and inspires that student, then that teacher might be a good fit. Recommendations are also a good way to judge the teacher.

    1.  What would you like to draw?

    2.  What have your drawn recently or are you starting from square one?

    3.  If you would like to learn watercolor, what are your drawing skills?

    4.  What supplies do you currently own?   Can you take a picture of what you have?
