Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students will be given a free consultation lesson, where I listen to their current repertoire (or music from band class) and define goals and processes for future lessons. Typical lessons include scale studies, etudes, introduction to saxophone repertoire, and selected music (student's choice–if music is unavailable I can create custom arrangements according to skill). If students enjoy the lesson and want to continue, we can work out a weekly time and begin making progress!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a licensed music educator in Ohio and attended Miami University in Oxford, OH for music education with saxophone as my primary instrument. As a music education major, I focused on pedagogy for all instruments, but fine tuned my skills particularly for woodwind instruments. I have performed on saxophone in wind ensembles, pit orchestras, small chamber groups, and as a soloist. Additionally, I have given private lessons to for several years while in school.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
I've been playing piano since age 5, and began playing viola, saxophone, and flute while in middle school. After choosing to pursue a music education degree, I began instructing small ensembles, sectionals, and private lessons before moving on to teaching band and orchestra classes as well.
What types of students have you worked with?
My primary experience is with middle school students, but I've also taught high school. I welcome students of all ages, but students who are in 5th grade or younger will need to have a consultation–this is to ensure the student has grown enough to handle the instrument...if not, the student can learn techniques and begin learning to read music until they can manage it easier.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently finished student teaching at Fairfield High School near Cincinnati, OH and was able to conduct a piece for the wind ensemble in my final concert with them. The students worked hard and we were able to put forth an excellent performance!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure that the teacher you find has 3 primary attributes: knowledge of the instrument, experience teaching, and you are comfortable with them. The third point is more important than you might think–the more comfortable you are with your teacher, the more you will enjoy it and the more you will improve. This is why I offer a free lesson to start!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your current experiences with music? With saxophone?
What are your goals on saxophone (why are you taking lessons)?
What is your setup? (Please note saxophone brand, type, mouthpiece name, reed name/size, and ligature)
