Square One Sports Academy
About
As the founder/director of Square One Sports Academy the mission is to teach fundamental skills that can be transferred from sports, to classroom, to life in a holistic approach. Along with 15+ years of coaching I have an equal amount of time dedicated to my education in psychology and working with youth outside of sports, behavioral management, and persons with disabilities.
Beginning in 2005 organizations and schools I have coached with include the Hickory Foundation YMCA, Hickory and Claremont Boys and Girls club where I was the basketball coach as well as the Athletic Coordinator, Hickory Recreation Department, Thomasville Recreation Department, Conover Cowboys, Bunker Hill Optimist, and Millbrook High School in Raleigh NC where I was a football, track and women’s basketball coach. I work with youth k-12 as well as adults 18+ and won championships on each level in basketball and football including 4 undefeated seasons, Millbrook high school 1st state championship run of 3 in a row winning 2 back to back in women's basketball. I have certifications in basketball, football, lacrosse, and rugby currently.
When training with me I match the surface with the target training goal. Choices are between indoor gym, outdoor court, track, grass work, indoor turf, or any combination depending on the location.
All sessions have a standard emphasis that it is bigger than sports. Each session begins with a health check spiritual, physical, and mental and for student athletes and academic check in. Stretching and fundamentals are a part of every session regardless of level or sport. Every drill is designed to reinforce the fundamentals and how to transfer the skills, sport specific IQ drills, and end each session putting in all together with eitgher one or one game or scrimmage or pick up game so that I can monitor how well the fundamentals are being utilized in real time. Some sessions are recorded and we end each day with an update on what improvements were made and what take home drills would be useful to prepare for the next session.
