About

SetApart music thrives on the idea that a person’s talent is unique and special; just like that person. When that talent is put to good use it can open doors for connection, opportunity and enjoyment. Our mission with music is to allow a person’s gift room enough to be expressed the way they are designed to express it.

SetApart Music seeks to help encourage our students to find what makes their music special, then seeks to guide them to an avenue that displays that talent.

With a B.A. in Music, Scott Johnson offers instruction on various musical instruments including:

Voice, Piano, All Forms Guitar, All Brass instruments, Clarinet, Drums,

Beginning Banjo, Violin, and Harmonica.

Audition Prep, Theory, Songwriting and Recording

He is known locally for his work with Modern Worship Bands, All-County Band auditions, and SongWriting Workshops. He has two public studio albums and has been performing in the Triad for the past 10 years.

Under Scott’s mentorships, his students have moved into leading worship at their churches, writing and recording albums now on YouTube, and enjoying small group bands and playing opportunities in various communities.

I live for the process. I love to see a new student decide to face the challenge of learning that instrument they've always wanted to learn. I love it when an advancing student reaches that goal or milestone and seeing that expressed in their playing and on their face.

I'm here to take students from where they are to where they want to be. It just takes a little time, commitment and effort!

Scott has been working with my son a few weeks now. We opted for remote lessons at this time. Despite the challenges remote learning can bring, I have been very impressed with my son’s progress. Scott is patient and encouraging. My son looks forward to his lessons and willingly practices. I’m thankful we found him.

I hold a B.A. in Music (with an emphasis in education) from Gardner-Webb University.

My prinicipal instrument in College was Voice (Tenor)

I was classically trained under Dr. Terry L. Fern.

While at GWU I enjoyed performing with:

    the Concert Choir (Tenor)

the Symphonic Band (Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone)

    The Orchestra (Trumpet)

    Children's Opera (3 years, 1 year manager)

    Musical Theatre (2 productions)

The Elementary Ed. Class (clarinet, violin)

The Secondary Ed. Class (All Brass instruments, percussion (drums, drums set)

    Handbell Choir

Since 2003, I have played guitar/piano in 5 performing bands (local, regional)  I have performed 300+ shows, (secular/sacred) I have released two albums, written 50+ songs

I have taught professionally since 2010 offering a variety of instruments to all ages including:

Voice, Piano, All Forms Guitar, All Brass Instruments, Clarinet Drums/Precussion/Set

    Beginning Banjo/Harmonica/Violin

I have hosted Master Classes/Workshops on Songwriting and Praise & Worship.

My team and I  currently mentoring 32 wonderful students that perform at least two recitals each year. (including Garage Band Camp in the summer!).

I customize my cirriculum to meet the goals and needs of my students (gerne, audition prep,) based on their interest and career path.

I am currently mentoring two worship teams.

And I am committed to the success of my students and the training, guidance, encouragement and instruction of my staff.

Yes.  Our rates are as follows:

    88.00 a month = 4 (30 minute lessons) 22.00 per lesson.

    168.00 a month = 4 (1 hour lessons) 42.00 per lesson.

That being stated; we are always accepting new students, regardless of age, ability or budget!  We want you to 'stick with it' long enough to see your goals met.

Promotions/Discounts/and Aid are always on-going, but are LIMITED to need and case-by case basis.

I sat with a friend of mine.  She shared her struggle to learn an instrument that I knew well, then showed me what she meant by playing for me.  I showed her a technique that helped and saw her change her playing in a moment.  After that, I was hooked!

Over the past ten years, I have been blessed to have many "seasons" of teaching.  I thrived early on with elementary age children and continue to enjoy them most (to be honest). After marrying last year, I found many teenagers brought into my path and have enjoyed their furor for "simple jazz standards" and keeping me on my toes with new bands they are listening to that I am not aware of.  I mostly of all think of myself as I mentor, and love when I am asked to prepare a student for a leading role in a church or a song release on YouTube, an All County Audition or courage to play in their first rectial.

I am currently teaching a friends' 5 year old daughter.  She is taking a 30 minute lesson with me each week and we split the time on two instruments that she likes:

    Drums and Piano.

I so look forward to meeting with her and her mom each week.  You never know what questions will be coming next or what thoughts and views she will have week to week.  She is so excited just to be learning and expressing herself.  She and her mom allow me to guide her to musical thoughts and concepts on these instruments and then I get to sit back and watch this little person I'm getting to know express something I showed her in her own way.  It feels my cup up each week.

My way is "a way" it's not "the way."  Ask the right questions so you can find that one person who can teach exactly what you want to know.  And don't settle.

What do I like about music?

What instrument would fit me best? (if you don't know, ask!)

What things could I do once I learn this instrument?

What does practice look like for me? (Am I willing?)

How will/Who will pay for this?  (If you plan it, you can do it)
