Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Find out what the student needs in the way of training and certification. If the student needs certification from a specific organization, we work together to get them what they need. I also will submit our programs, or have the organizations that I offer classes from, submit programs for review and approval to government and/or regulatory agencies.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching First Aid and CPR classes for 20 years. I spent about 10 years or more with the American Red Cross in both a volunteer and paid capacity, including time as an American Red Cross Health and Safety Director and Program specialist. I am a Paramedic, and still work in the field, and have been in EMS for over 15 years in various positions. I also teach Emergency Medical Responder, for more than one organization, and have been teaching it for about 15 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing depends on the organizations classes I offer. If someone needs a specific organization's certification, then the price maybe more (i.e. American Red Cross costs more to teach, but you get a certification that is universally recognized by most government and regulatory agencies).
How did you get started teaching?
I started as a youth volunteer and a lifeguard with the American Red Cross, and it was a natural fit and progression to become a First Aid and CPR instructor.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with the general public who want to learn first aid and CPR for personal enrichment and to know what to do in an emergency. I have also worked with company employees, middle and upper management within companies, as well as hunting, fishing, rafting, and horseback trail guides, docotrs, dentists, nurses, church security teams, and EMS and Fire providers. Currently I am also working with off road and other outdoor recreators.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When you are looking for a First Aid and CPR instructor, ask if the book and student materials are included in the price, and if you get to keep the student materials. Find out how long they have been teaching, and what classes they teach (ask for the entire catalog of courses and what organizations to they offer classes/certifications from) Look for classes that fit your needs. Sometimes it is more economical for a student to take a CPR and First Aid course together, then to take those courses individually.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I need this training for a job requirement (ie. nurses, doctors, dentists, EMT's, company safety team, and similar) Does the course seem too long or short for the type of training beeing sought?
Do I need a renewal or initial course?
What learning environment is best for me (ie. online blended learning and then a skills assessment in person)?
What is my personal budget for this training?
