About
I’m an award-winning painter who loves to share the idea that every mark a person makes is important. I’ve been working with children and adults for over 20 years helping them integrate creativity and art into their own lives.
In class we focus on gesture, emotion, mark making, and balance. Drawing and painting realistically is encouraged but it’s not necessary. No prior experience or supplies are needed, however students are encouraged to practice drawing on their own during their free time. We work with a variety of mediums starting with pencil and moving to charcoal, pastel, acrylic, collage, and watercolor. Focus is on fundamentals and learning from historic great teachers such as Kimon Nicolaides author of The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study and others.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Since my class size is small I work with each student to develop their own interests. If they are open, I like to focus on creativity, myth-busting, and practice. We start with simple exercises and move into a variety of mediums as students get more comfortable. We will work with pencil, charcoal, pastel, crayon, water color, and acrylics. We may work with clay, paper, and photography.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have owned Sun & Moon Studio, a place where kids can explore their unique creativity, since 1990. I have formal training in photography, illustration, and graphic design. My work has been featured on products, in film productions, and I have collectors worldwide.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It is important to understand your goals and set realistic expectations. Teachers who work with children specifically bring more than art technique, they bring compassion and a sense of possibilities. The children who work with me know that every mark they make is essential, that trees can be purple, and no mistakes happen.
