What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Review the basics. Ensure understanding of the flow of water to and from the paper. Discuss color mixing, washes, working light to dark. Then discuss composition and perspective as it applies to the subject.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a professional surveyor and civil engineer who has combined art with engineering knowledge of landscapes, topography, structures. I am an amateur artist. I have read volumes about watercolor and painting. I am self taught but I have taken many classes.

How did you get started teaching?
I have taught many internal classes at work for surveying, attended toastmasters, and my one of my primary duties at work is business development. I work with clients to inform them of the engiineering process and keep in close contact with them throughout the project.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Painting Gavins Point Dam or the Niobrara RR Bridge in perspective: in both cases I set up my easel on site to gather key points using a perspective viewfinder I had devised. I use Aquabord instead of paper. I have painted watercolor on site and in the studio.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who captures your interests and who is like minded about goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your goals? What areas would you like to work on most? What strengths do you have that you would continue to build?
