About

I teach encaustic (painting with molten pigmented wax) and oil painting only no acrylics.. My service stands out in that I meet you where you are artistically and we build on that strengthening your own personal voice. I take you thru various demos, in encaustic I instruct you on how to use the blowtorch, safety, and of course how to lay the paint (molten wax) down with brush on panel. This is also an ancient medium made modern and is unlike any other medium because you work with heat. My rate includes all materials except the panel you’ll paint on.

I enjoy sharing all my knowledge about this wonderful medium and helping students find their way in it. This is a very likeable medium.

Oil I teach reading values, contouring, color mixing. Whatever is needed to get to the next level.

My studio is state of the art. Visit. Decide.

    Frequently asked questions

If the student is a beginner we start with a 2 hour lesson and painting session. We begin with an introduction to materials and safety. In encaustic, we start with wax medium on panel learning how to apply molten wax and fuse with a blowtorch. I recommend the book "the art of encaustic painting" by Joanne mattera

In oil we would first learn how to decipher values in a grey scale. Then you would progress to color using a limited palette.

I have a BFA in painting and an advanced encaustic level at Visual Art Center of NJ for 4 years. I have been using encaustic in my practice for the past 12 years. The majority of work on my website is encaustic.

Oil was my first medium I’ve been using since 1974 so 49 yrs experience. I have shown my work nationally and I’m represented by The Painting Center in New York City
I offer two hour sessions in either medium, encaustic or oil. I’m offering a special introductory rate of 5 two hour sessions for $250 which breaks down to $50/2 hrs. In encaustic all materials are included as part of the special except panels which you can purchase at my studio. In oil, most people want to use their own paint so bring it and a panel or canvas. No bigger than 10”x8” or 12”x9” to start. If you don’t have oil paint to bring I can provide. Pick your medium and let me know.

I started teaching students privately in 2010 then in 2018 took a formal teaching position to teach encaustic at the Visual Art Center of New Jersey in Summit

I have worked a lot with beginners and also intermediate and advanced. Some come with no creative experience some have formal training in their history. No art experience necessary. I teach to all types of students, housewives, professionals, artists, college students, including some with special needs if it can be accommodated

Recently finished teaching a ten week course at the Visual Art Center of NJ . The students had a blast and gave me a great review. We sadly ended the course but managed a critique of all their work which everyone appreciated.

read my bio on my website at www. chasecantwell.com and you can converse with me directly ask questions and visit the studio. Pick which medium you’d like to work with. You want a teacher that is flexible and meets the you where you are artistically and can help you move forward.

Read a little bit about encaustic if you’d like to explore and experience that or oil bring your paint let’s discuss the level your on and what you need to learn to progress forward.
