I offer a fresh perspective on the role of the music teacher. I'm certainly here to help my students learn the fundamentals, but I believe in a why-first approach to lessons. If I can't clearly articulate the reason why we're doing something and the impact it will have on a student's progress or understanding, then we don't do it. Nothing is arbitrary, and every moment is useful. I try to make sense of things by observing the patterns and relationships at play in the world around me, and I often employ this approach in my curriculum. Whether we're discussing scales, chords, saxophone technique, vocal technique or songwriting—everything can be...

Eric B. says, "My son Tom was a first-year public school band student (saxophone) in fourth grade. I wanted to keep him playing during the summer, and Matt really came through with challenging and engaging practice sessions. Tom said it was harder than band practice, and pretty soon I found that he was opening the case and practicing on his own without any prompting from me. Matt helped him pick some music to work on, set some goals, and they consistently worked and advanced, and worked and advanced. Tom did his lessons over Zoom and it was ideal. I could hear in the tone in my son's voice that he really liked Matt and felt relaxed. And then I would hear this organized, structured practice session, and I was amazed at how Tom improved. This fall a buddy of Tom's from another school asked the Band teacher if he know my son. The Band teacher said yes he did, and that Tom was the best saxophone player in the fifth grade! I'm grateful to Matt for working with my kid, and I'm looking forward to hiring him again." Read more

The son of two music teachers, I have been immersed in music, first violin, then piano, and finally trombone, since the age of 7. I fell in love with jazz, especially Dixieland, Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, through Miles Davis, JJ Johnson and beyond, when I was a teenager, but ultimately my main focus has been on Classical music for most of my career. I attended Juilliard Pre-College, Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School, where I studied with the top trombonists in the classical orchestral field, and I now perform with some of the top orchestras in New York City, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, America...

I live and went to school in New York, obtaining a BFA in Music from the City College of New York and a MM in Jazz Performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music. As a trumpet player, I have played in a wide variety of musical settings, including jazz combos and big bands, concert bands and orchestras, Latin and salsa bands, and even the occasional rock band. I currently serve as a brass and piano instructor at several music schools in Queens and Long Island, and maintain my own active private teaching studio. In addition to my musical endeavors, I was a math and English tutor during my college years, working primarily with elementary and...

Joey says, "J.Q. is patient, methodical, and precise. His trumpet lessons are comprehensive, he makes sure to answer in detail and check that I understand before continuing. He effortlessly picks up where we left off, even if it's been several weeks. Best of all, J.Q. is honest in his critique—if I'm not doing something correctly he gently lets me know—and his suggestions get right to the heart of how to be a better trumpet player. Great teacher." Read more

Maia S.
He's a great teacher: encouraging, but also knows when and how to critique and not discourage a beginner. Makes sure it is challenging, but not overwhelming. Encyclopedic knowledge of jazz and music theory. Definitely recommend!
