About

One to one instruction is the quickest most efficient way to learn a language. I offer reasonably priced private tutoring online, so you can take lessons in the privacy of your home, at your office, or anywhere you want to be. I work with English language learners at all levels, offering classes tailored to fit their goals.

I know how difficult it can be for adults to learn a new language. I use materials and topics that appeal to my students' interests and are relevant to their learning needs. Lessons are challenging, but they are also fun.

We can work when you want -- mornings, afternoons, or evenings.

I will work with you to create a program to meet your needs. Whether you are an absolute beginner or an advanced speaker already working in the U.S., we will focus on what you need to learn.

I bring many years experience teaching all levels of English, and have taught writing to both native-English speakers and English learners. I'm happy to help with resumes, cover-letters, digital job applications, and interviewing.

We can start with a free consultation and mini-lesson with no obligation.

Learning to express yourself in a new language is an empowering experience. I love watching my students grow as English language speakers.

There are a lot of "firsts" in my classes: the first time a student uses a certain verb tense correctly, or pronounces something perfectly, or makes a joke in English. I love watching my students go out into the world with their new skills. It's good news when someone gets his or her first job interview in English, and even better when he or she lands the job! I love being a part of positive change in my students' lives!

    Frequently asked questions

Students can text, phone, or email with questions. I offer a free consultation in person or online via Skype to all my students. This gives them a chance to ask questions, and it gives me a chance to assess their English level. Once I know what a student is looking for, and what his or her English language goals are, we can begin to plan. I tailor my lessons to the needs, interests, and goals of each student.

After I graduated from university, I started tutoring ESL and basic English writing at LaGuardia Community College -- one of the most linguistically diverse schools in the world. Later I started teaching there. I have also taught at the Community College of Vermont, Queens College, and in New York City public high schools. I have a master's in social work and a master's in fine arts (creative writing). I have completed additional coursework in education, and taken many workshops in 1 to 1 tutoring.

I learned Spanish when I was an adult, so I know how difficult it is to learn a second language when you are older.  I don't speak French, Italian, or Portuguese but I know a little about the grammatical structure and some vocabulary in those languages.

Online lessons start at $25 for 30 minutes, $35 for 45-minutes, $40 for one-hour, $55 for 90-minutes, and $75 for 2 hours. Rates are slightly higher in the evenings and for weekend classes. I am happy to send you a rate chart on request.

After I graduated university, I planned to study creative writing in graduate school. In the meantime, I took a job tutoring at LaGuardia Community College. I was hooked! I went on to work there as a teacher. Since that time, I have worked as a social worker, a program administrator, a grant writer, and a few other things, but I always return to teaching and tutoring.

I have worked with beginners, intermediate, and advanced English language learners. Some of my students are fluent or nearly fluent in English. Many are working professionals or are looking for work in the United States. They realize that they need to perfect their language skills in order to succeed in a highly competitive job market. Others are graduate students, who people trying to get into graduate school. Some are artists or performers who need to improve their English language skills for public presentations.

One of my students is here with her husband who came over for a job. My student had to leave her job to come with him. She had studied English before, but when we met, she was afraid to speak. We worked diligently on speaking, comprehension, grammar, writing, and everything else. She lost her fear. Finally, we started working on job interview questions, resumes, cover letters, etc. She recently started an internship at a prestigious company. It's not her dream job, but she's almost there!

Don't just look for a great teacher, look for the right teacher for you. Some teachers are great for beginners. Others are experts at making you feel at ease about speaking, but won't challenge you enough. Think about what your goals are first, and then look for the right teacher to help you reach those goals.

Read the profile. Read reviews. Ask questions.

If the teacher offers a free consultation or trial lesson, test the teacher by asking him or her to explain a phrase, or grammatical rule, or something else that will give you insight into his or her teaching method.

One to one language lessons involve working closely with your teacher, so make sure that you are comfortable and at ease with him or her.

Students should not be afraid to talk about their learning style and what works best for them. Students should be clear on their goals, and ask questions to make sure they are choosing the right teacher to help them meet their goals.
