About
I was very fortunate to learn traditional techniques of painting and drawing. I think this is an essential foundation that opens doors for any art style. I have seen amazing results with my students who studied with me as beginners and matured into independent, both realist and abstract artists. I have many years of experience in teaching and painting and feel very confident that I can provide the foundation that will help students to flourish. My lessons are open to public. I charge $50 for 1 hour.
I have been painting for over 40+ years and teaching for the most part of it. The bigest satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment is when one acculumulates knowledge and experience in his/her field and is able to pass it along. I take each student individudally through all the steps of creating a painting, we discuss each step, we look at other artists, study them. I explain and show by doing a painting with them. My biggest joy is when I see that the student craves more knowledge, wants to excel, tries hard and gets amazing results.
I started learning traditional techniques of painitng in St. Peterburg, Russia in an Intermediate Art School affiliated with St.Petersburg Academy of the Fine Arts and continued in the US in Cooper Union College in New York and Pennsylavania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. I have been exhibiting my work regularly in galleries and small museums, receiving numerous medals and awards. I have been teaching privately all these years. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I'd like to see student's work to establish their level. Then we discuss student's ideas and goals. Depending on this, I either set up a still life or we learn how to paint nature, or we draw and sketch people, do portraits or we copy old masters. It is all very individual and my lessons are tailored specifically to each student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I studied in Cooper Union, Philadelphia College of Art.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My Lessons are open to the public.
$50 for 1hour
How did you get started teaching?
I started giving private lessons after I graduated from the academy and continued for many years
What types of students have you worked with?
I helped students to prepare art portfolios for for high school and college, helped college art majors to progress in their technique, older people to develop skills in their hobby. I also started after school program for kids, ages 10 and up.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of my students challenged herself to draw a portrait of her school principal. She never did portraits before. Under my guidance she not only made a portrait that looked like her princpipal, but also gifted it to him. He liked it and hung in his office. The student was very proud of her accomplishment and it gave me a tremendous sense of fulfillment.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It’s very important to find a teacher who had serious professional training, who is passionate about teaching. A teacher has to be able to do a demo and actually show a student how to make a drawing or a painting, not just talk him/her through the process.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think the student needs to inquire about a teacher's education and level of professionalism as an artist and as a teacher. Based on what a student is interested to learn, he might ask a teacher about his/her approach to teaching, advise on best medium to start with. It will greatly help the teacher to see samples of student's work in order to help with advise.
