Frequently asked questions

I evaluate the level and experience of the student. If the student is a beginner, we start with the beginning basics. We discuss goals and make a plan from there.

I have a masters degree in music performance. I play flute and piccolo with the New Mexico Philharmonic. I also play alto flute for Arts In Medicine. I am a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and am also a member of the state and local branches of that organization. I have been awarded National Certification by MTNA, which is the highest level of certification.

I offer 30-minute, 45-minute, and 60-minute lessons, depending on the age, level, and preference of the student.  Each lesson length has its own price, with the 45 an 60 minute lessons at a discount. Lessons are scheduled once a week. Billing is by the month, due at the first lesson of the month. I have a liberal make-up lesson policy. Prices are posted on my website: saratutlandflutestudio.com.

I have always had a passion for teaching for as long as I can remember.  I have always loved sharing knowledge. I started teaching music when I was an undergraduate student at university.

I would say that I have worked with pretty much all types of students. I have started piano students as young as 4 years old, and have taught students in their 80's. Flute students can usually start around age 7, although I have had a few start when they were 6. I teach professionals, amateur adults, band/orchestra kids and others.

Albuquerque Flute Association's Flute Fiesta! It is an entire day of flute-related events. We bring in a guest artist who does a recital and masterclass. Flute and music dealers have many flutes and flute music available to try and purchase. There are workshops, talks, and performances, and also a performance competition for students, followed by an awards ceremony.

Look for someone who has professional credentials and experience. If you have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish in lessons, discuss that with potential teachers. If you don't yet have a formed idea of what you want, an experienced professional can help you define goals.

If you took lessons, what would you want to accomplish by doing that? Why do you want to take lessons? What special requests/needs/concerns do you have?
