About

I have been a "photographer" since the age of seven when I received my first 126 roll film camera and shot in black and white back in the mid-'60s. Since then, I have worked my way toward becoming as knowledgeable in photography as I could be. I received my Certificate of Completion from the New York Institute of Photography in 2004 and I spent several years studying Fine Art Photography at the Academy of Art University Online as I was on active duty in the Navy at the time.

When I was stationed in Monterey, CA, I entered three of my images in the Monterey County Fair Photography contest and took three Honorable Mentions on my first go. I had solo shows covered by the Monterey Herald at Borders Bookstore as well as a solo show in a now-defunct art gallery in Pacific Grove, CA.

I am a four-time finalist out of five years of entry in the Black and White Spider Awards and my work has been selected for exhibit at Art San Diego 2018, ArtEXPO New York 2019, and invited to exhibit at Art Vancouver 2019.

My work was recently exhibited as part of a group show at Montrêux Golf and Country Club, during the first ever art exhibit at this prestigious Jack Nicklaus designed PGA rated golf community on 15 June of this year and is to be exhibited as part of a group show during Artown 2019 in Reno, NV during the month of July 2019.

I have been studying photography on my own for the last 20 years and have a personal library of more than 200 books on the subject. I have been using Photoshop since Photoshop 3 and have become very proficient at using this as my digital darkroom.

Every photograph has a story behind it even if it is only the Why of what caught one's eye to capture the image at hand. There are two primary schools of thought in photography. One is the planning for the light method and the other is the light is right somewhere method. A third method was offered by Henri-Cartier Bresson which he defined in his book, Images à la Sauvette (The Decisive Moment) helped to refine the wait-for-the light method made popular by Ansel Adams. Ed Weston was of the 'the light is right somewhere' process.

I teach how to work with all three and to take advantage of the best of these methodologies, along with the basic rules of composition and camera technique, to create images that are unique and inspiring.

I teach the Fundamentals, the Advanced, and the niche areas of photography such as nature, wildlife, abstract nature, macro, and winter photography. I can also teach Street Photography, Shooting in Black and White, and Night Photography.

I start with classroom training with examples from my own works for a few hours and then we head into the field the next day to practice what was learned. At the end of the day, each student submits an image they are happy with and we critique it.

My critiques are unlike any you may have experienced. I hold a conversation with the photographer started by asking a few questions. My intent is not to tear down, but to investigate the thought process and build on it.

My critiques are designed to inspire instead of crush.

If you would like to learn how to take photographs instead of snapshots, if you would like to learn how to use your camera beyond 'Program/Auto', if you would like to stop writing on social media, "The photo doesn't do the setting justice' I can help.

I am working on my website but my Facebook page is
