About
To reach me text 347-301-1897 or email [email protected]. I am noticing a pattern of inquiries on this platform that are not serious and rather wasteful of my valuable time. I have a high work volume so, I won't be answering messages on lessons.com. Contact me directly if you are serious about receiving private lessons.
I am both a freelance Artist and a full time Teacher with the Department of Education with 6 years of experience. What’s great about my style is that I like to work with learners of all ages.
For a more in depth look at what my students and I create check out my website at www.cystinecastellano.com.
I enjoy the stability of teaching and the freedom of being a visual artist. Connecting with others and conveying messages together is both expressive and intimate.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Working with a new student is a process that requires assessment of student abilities, experience and goals. Once I gain that insight, I tailor my lessons to match the desired result. My students always learn Art in a unique way because I show them how it could further enhance their understanding of other academic subjects (such as literacy, history and mathematics) as well as sharpen their life skills. I am upfront about supply needs, cost per class, flexible location, plus all books and notes are provided by myself during instruction time.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have trained with the best artists in the fine arts industry. Most are creators of Disney films and pioneers of the animation industry itself. My history teacher was THE Howard Beckerman! I have also worked with trained actors who taught me how to bring characters to life on paper. I am well versed in traditional fine art, fashion illustration and digital programs to enhance images or hand made works.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing is per in-person session. For fine art it’s a flat rate of $80 a session. You can choose 35-60 minutes for the course. I recommend a full hour because arts mastery takes time.
For a digital lesson, the flat rate is $100. It’s more money because different steps are involved. It’s not traditional draftsmanship.
I do not charge taxes and there are no hidden fees. You pay only for your supplies and lessons.
I supply notes and books during instruction time.
During this time I prefer holding zoom lessons for $35 a session. I will screen share material and coach you personally for 45 minutes. If this does not interest you and you still want to have an in person session that can be arranged. I need to see recent negative COVID results from household members including the student and mask wearing needs to be practiced. I take safety seriously.
How did you get started teaching?
I have worked for several non-profits and charter schools as an after school teaching artist since the age of 25. I am currently working for the Department of Education, NYC.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with people of all ages and abilities.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice is not to hire an instructor based on price alone but the quality that you will receive from each lesson. Sometimes a more expensive class taken less frequently is of greater value.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about the mediums you are interested in exploring, think about your goal and the time in which you want to achieve it. Is this something you want to achieve in 2 weeks or 10? I’m here to help you figure this out and will answer any questions you may have.
