About

Originally from Colorado, I received a Bachelor of Music Performance at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. I hold two Master of Music degrees from New York University, Steinhardt. In 2008 I started teaching guitar and recorder for two sisters who lived across the street. Since then I have taught flute for music minors in college, retirees and saxophone players looking to improve their flute technique. I am familiar with several flutes, including the concert flute, alto flute and ocarina.

As a performer, I have played my flutes in a wide range of settings. In Denver, I premiered works for solo flute, flute duet and flute with electronics at Dazzle Restaurant. I also frequented the same venue for their weekly jazz jam session. While I was in Seattle, I was fortunate to play free music at the Chapel Performance Space with Eric Barber, and at Spite House with Stephen Fandrich. In 2016, I performed Anamnese by Hiromi Watanabe at Abrons Arts Center in Manhattan, and in 2019 I performed with members of the New York Composers Circle at the National Opera Center. That same year, I had the opportunity to perform in Aarzu, an experimental dance show by Aliya Kerim at Under St. Marks Theatre. My album for jazz quintet was premiered in November 2018 at Williamsburg Music Center in Brooklyn.

I am flexible, open minded and happy to tailor my services to the interests and learning style of the student. All ages and experience levels welcome.

I love music and I love teaching. I have a passion for passing on my knowledge and making people happy.

Ammon will greatly improve your tone quality right away and also understands how to help use your body in a more efficient and comfortable way. She is fluent in more different styles of music than any other flutist Ive met and plays a variety of flutes, ocarinas and whatever else she can get her hands on so whatever youre interested in shes probably already experienced in it. The space she teaches in is quiet, clean and fun to be in and easy to get to from a few different subways. Most importantly she is patient, thoughtful, succinct, intelligent and fun. You will enjoy your lessons and learn a lot.

Ammon is an excellent musician, flute player and composer. It has always been a great pleasure and I have learnt a lot of things by working with Ammon. Ammon has also a broad knowledge both in Jazz and Classical and I would reccommend studying with Ammon

Ive taken flute lessons with Ammon to help with my doubling. Saxophone is my primary instrument, and Ammon has really helped me to understand the fundamental differences between the instruments, allowing me to transition comfortably to the flute. Ammon has a lot of passion for the instrument and is great at both meeting me at my learning level, and helping me achieve my personal goals. You get the feeling that nothing makes Ammon happier than playing and talking about flute, and that makes each lesson fun. Hour long lessons still seem too short when you consider how much ground we cover and how much fun we have. I never feel like I run out of material to work on in between our meetings.

    Frequently asked questions

I start with a free lesson so the student can decide if it is a good fit.  I ask questions about the student's interests and if they have played anything before.  If so, I ask for a demonstration to assess the playing experience of the student.  I answer any questions the student may have.  If the student wishes to continue, all lessons thereafter are tailored to the interests and experience of the player.

I started teaching flute in 2008 to children in my neighborhood.  I enjoyed the process of learning with the student and watchig them grow, and continued to teach up to the present.

I have taught students as young as 9 and students over 60.  I teach all ages and ability levels from beginning to early college.  All styles are welcome.
