Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I'll begin with exercises to get the body ready.
Baseball:
For defense I'll want to improve the clients reflexes/reaction. I'll evaluate if my client has any fear of the baseball (the cause of bad defense can be mental and comes from being scared of getting hit by the baseball or fearing the force of the baseball.) We'll do plenty of basics like catching groundballs, flyballs, line drives, etc. We will also do plenty of fundamental infield drills and outfield drills. We will also do drills with tennis balls, for clients that want to improve their reflexes/reaction to the next level I will add dodgeball and racquetball drills.
For offense we'll do fundamental swinging drills. I'll evaluate the clients stance and try to perfect their swinging mechanics. Once the client has a comfortable perfect stance and swing we'll move on to basic batting drills. I like doing overhand throws with my secret recipe, this drill is hard but I noticed it has improved past kids I trained the most. We'll also do batting drills vs each type of pitch. We will end it with bunting practice.
For pitching I go by my motto "your favorite and the fast should never touch the bat." I always make sure my students favorite type of pitch and their fastballs are perfect. If my clients can't throw a strike at will when they're pitching a fastball or their favorite type of pitch than I am failing as a coach. Before any pitching of course I will evaluate their stance, wind up, leg lift, etc. I'll teach them different ways of pitching the ball. I will focus on how to hide the ball while also maximize the power in their release.
Basketball:
For defense I'll want to improve athletes reflexes/reaction. I will teach players how to time dribbles, predict opponents dribble moves, steal fundementals, improve their double team tactics, taking a charge, blocking basics, etc. I will teach them each type of zone defense and how to defend each zone. We will also do drills with tennis balls, for clients that want to improve their reflexes/reaction to the next level I will add dodgeball and racquetball drills.
For offense we're starting off with weighted ball dribbling drills. I can not move forward in offense until the player I'm training has mastered dribbling and ball protection. No offense can happen if a player lacks the ability to NOT turn the ball over. After dribbling is downpacked we will do nonstop shooting drills. This generation loves shooting 3s but a consistent midranger will always be more reliable. I will train my players to be pure shooters from anywhere in the court and not just the three point line. I will improve their shooting form, from the way they grip the ball, to how they set their feet, to the starting point of the ball, to how they bring the ball up to shoot. My favorite practice for offense is working on the players footwork. I have a lot of secret recipe practices for this that I mimic from the greats such as Kobe and MJ (and many others.) Last but not least free throw drills, they're free for a reason. I will improve their confidence, stance, release, and "ritual."
