My teaching approach:
I have been playing acoustic guitars for over 40 years. When I started winding down from constant touring and recording, I found I loved teaching other people to play roots-based and contemporary-based acoustic guitar styles, techniques and repertoire. My students range from beginners to advanced players, from children to retirees.
I teach the way I learned, figuring out what kinds of music you'd love to play and how to get there, including the songs you already love, ones you've written, or pieces that expand your repertoire and musical knowledge.
My influences are: Mississippi John Hurt, Reverend Gary Davis, Bonnie Raitt, Libba Cotten, Billie Holiday, Bottine Souriante, Holly Near and a host of songwriters & players over several decades.
Lessons take place online or in person, with times and days arranged to fit our mutual schedules
Guitar Techniques: Fingerstyle, Song accompaniment, Rhythm guitar, Open tunings, Slide Guitar, Performance, Reading Music, Song Writing
Your first guitar lesson with me, you'd play what you already know how to do, talk about where you'd like to go with your playing, where you feel stuck, songs & styles you like, if you have been working with someone else or on your own. I ask new students to show or tell me about any music materials you have really liked or DIS liked working with. I watch & listen to what you already know how to do with each hand, musical knowledge and musical interests.
A guitar lesson with me ? Depending on a student's level and interests, lessons can combine elements of the real basics - chords, strums, picking patterns - as well as building into more complex aspects, like bass runs, melody and harmony lines, arranging breaks, music theory or instrumentals written out in tablature or standard music notation. Beginning students work on tablature instrumental pieces while they build up their stamina for chords and more complex instrumentals.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student include all ages & levels interested in acoustic guitar styles, techniques and repertoire.
I have loved playing guitar since I was a teenager. After many years of touring, recording and playing, I find am excited by helping people find their way into their own styles of playing. My strong background in roots and blues music gives me a lot of resources to widen my students' repertoire of styles and pieces. I can introduce students to old styles and artists from the 1920's like Mississippi John Hurt or help them work out ways to play tunes from the Grateful Dead, Modest Mouse or Ed Sheeran.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask how long - and if - they've been playing guitar, what they want to learn, what & how they'd like to be playing in a few years. I also ask people who already play what made them decide to take lessons - if they have gotten stuck in their playing, if they want some new resources and directions, help with particular styles, etc.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was a full-time touring and recording artist for about 30 years, playing roots-based acoustic music, including everything from old acoustic blues and country, to original and contemporary music. MY recordings heard and downloaded on iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, etc...
