About

I'm a retired full-time performing jazz musician accepting a limited number of students. I teach jazz improvisation for all horns. I studied with Lennie Tristano and Connie Crothers and teach very much the way I was taught.

For many years I entertained seniors who appreciated the songs I played because swing jazz music is what I call their "personally significant music", which can be very powerful and healing. Each generation has its own songs that affect our lives deeply when we form our identities in adolescence, and that is the power and essence of music wellness.

I was paid so much better than playing in nightclubs and restaurants! So I did that and got to be home at night and spend my days making people feel good.

I recently retired and moved to Boston. I'm currently working on a literary project that shares many of the lessons of my three mentors.

My full bio is available on Facebook and includes samples from my recordings.

Frequently asked questions

I listen to what their goals are, evaluate their current abilities, identify issues to focus on and generate an excitement about learning to improvise.

I studied for three years with the late Lennie Tristano and another ten years with Connie Crothers.  They were both master jazz instrumentalists.

Teaching has not figured prominently in my career -  performing has.  And, now that I'm performing less I'd like to begin teaching more.

Again, I have not taught much but have taught different age groups and am comfortable with all.

I'm going to be interviewed by guitarist Ron Jackson on his live broadcase on Sunday, May 10 at 9pm.
