Travis McAvene, 49, now has 27 years of high level basketball coaching experience at the prep school, college and overseas professional level.
McAvene works now as Global Basketball Grassroots Director for Big Baller Brand (BBB) where he is responsible for developing basketball clinics, All-Star games and AAU tournaments across the United States and Internationally. McAvene is also in charge of working with former college basketball players and setting up private workouts overseas with teams at the professional level.
McAvene completed the 2024-2025 season as Head Basketball Coach and General Manager for Mantarrayas Isla Mujeres Professional Club in the Caribbean Basketball League in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. McAvene was recently named 2024 Caribbean Basketball League Executive of the Year and won a Championship!
McAvene spent five seasons from 2019-2024 with Santiago Basket Titans Dorado in the LDC Professional Basketball League (Dominican Republic). McAvene won back to back United Cup Championships as Head Coach and was also named 2020 & 2021 Latinbasket.com Coach of the Year. McAvene is the professional club’s all-time winningest coach.
Coach McAvene has built a great reputation for producing Championship level teams and is considered one of the best offensive minds in basketball. McAvene’s coaching philosophy has always been modeled around legendary college basketball coaches Jerry Tarkanian at UNLV and Nolan Richardson at University of Arkansas.
McAvene started his coaching career in 1998 and now has coached at the NCAA Division I, NAIA and NJCAA college basketball levels. Since 2012, McAvene has coached in the following countries at the professional level; Taiwan, Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, Lebanon, Tonga, Belize and Mexico. During this time, McAvene has won Championships in Taiwan, Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Tonga and Mexico.
McAvene developed a reputation as a Championship Head Coach winning back to back Prep School National Championships in 2003 and 2004. He also built the best prep school basketball program in the Midwest at Harmony Prep in Cincinnati, Ohio from 2005-2006. During this time, McAvene coached, developed and placed over 30 NCAA Division I basketball players at major universities.
McAvene served as Head Coach for our USA Jones Cup Men’s National Team in Taiwan from 2012-2013. During this time, he won silver and bronze medals against Olympic Men’s National Teams throughout Asia and the Middle East. McAvene also served as General Manager for our USA Jones Cup Men’s National Team from 2014-2016 and was responsible for hiring former NBA Coach of the Year Sam Mitchell.
Coach McAvene was also a key part of the recruiting and talent evaluation process with the world famous Harlem Globetrotters from 2010-2016, where he served as a professional scout. During this time, he recruited and signed several college basketball players to play for the Washington Generals with former General Manager John Ferrari.
McAvene holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities and Social Sciences from Southern Utah University. He also has an Associates Degree from Vincennes University. McAvene played his college basketball from 1994-1998 at Indiana Wesleyan University, Sinclair Community College and Taylor University-Fort Wayne. McAvene currently resides in Dayton, Ohio and has one daughter Jada McAvene, who played her college volleyball and recently graduated at University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky
