What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I have new students describe their goals first of all, and then I assess their current skill level. From there I can start working on a plan to get them where they want to be. I try to tailor a student's lessons to match their musical tastes and preferences whenever possible, but I am always happy to introduce them to new musical ideas.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have about 25 years of experience working with students on a one to one basis, a formal education in music up to the post-graduate level, and several decades of performing experience.
I have a degree in music from the University of Akron (Bachelor of Music), and I finished all my coursework but not my thesis for a Master's degree in music Education from Bowling Green State University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Four 30-minute lessons are $110; I also offer 60 minute lessons. I make sure students leave the lesson with a clear plan for what to work on specifically both in the long and short term.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone you can get along with and work with well - this person should have great communication and teaching skills, which is a different then being a great musician. You should have an idea of what you want to accomplish, but trust in your teacher to get you to your goals and help inspire new goals for you also.
