About

After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Fine Arts, I was fortunate enough to study at the Paul Ingbretson Studio in the Boston School method of painting.

With a legacy passing through the Boston School to French Academic Painting, this rigorous training imparts a foundation of time-honored techniques that blend solid academic drawing with beautifully seen impressionistic color. Emphasis is placed on accurate drawing with sensitivity to form and edges, brilliant light effects, vibrant color, and overall unity.

My primary focus has been still life painting, as it is "the best way to continue to explore and learn the lifelong pursuit of the technical aspects of painting and the serious study of nature." Fascinated with creating atmospheric scenes through thoughtful paint handling, I feel that my still life objects must work together first in design and color harmonies creating powerful images with pleasing abstractions. As a story teller I like to create scenes with mood and feeling often using multiple panels to create a relationship not just with the viewer but between the panels. My current series deals with children at play or in the act of creation.

I have has taught for the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the University of Cincinnati, as well as privately in my studio.

Frequently asked questions

I am very hands on. As art is a visual process it is best to take the students brush and demonstrate the process. I tend demonstrate, allow the student to work for a period. Critique the work, demonstrate on the paper or canvas as needed and hand the brush back to the student to continue.

The acedemic process of teaching not only works great for creating painters, it also creates great teachers of the craft. So once I returned from studying in New Hampshire I began teaching almost immediately.

All types from beginners to college professionals. I generally like to work with adults as the process is best for anyone over the age of 15 or so.
