About this pro

Hello! My name is Maggie Shannon and I am a rising senior at Manhattan School of Music in New York City, NY. I am a mezzo-soprano pursuing a degree in classical vocal performance and Opera. While at MSM I have performed in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea and Massenet's Manon. I have taken piano levels 1-4 and have been playing both acoustic and electric guitar for 6 years. I am educationally trained in English Diction, Italian Diction, French Diction, German Diction, Aural Skills, Music History, and Music Theory. I have studied and performed the follow genres: blues, classical, country, musical theatre, pop, and rock music. I was the lead singer for a rock band for 4 years and have done numerous musical theatre productions including, The Drowsy Chaperone (Chaperone), The Little Mermaid (Ursula), Beauty and The Beast (Mrs. Potts). I am a coach with a big personality, who believes in making everybody feel like a somebody. I am a firm believer that with the right amount of support and guidance there is nothing you can't do! I hope to help you gain experience in all aspects of music whether it is educational, instrumental, or vocal. I am someone who helps students reach personal excellence. If you want to become a better musician and performer, while making your instrument and your voice larger than life... then I am the coach for you!

I enjoy absolutely every aspect of music whether it be learning, performing, or teaching. I have been given so much through the music world and teaching is the best way to give back that I have learned and pay it forward. I think that the best parts of music are found in the individuals ablility to express who they are through what they love. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that you impacted someone's life through the use of your own unique gift. It is a wonderful opportuinty that exsists within the arts, and I cannot think of anything more enjoyable than helping foster that opportunity in another musician.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When beginning with a new student, I start by asking the student questions about their music background, years of experience, current music courses and or opportunities, what they feel their musical strengths and weaknesses are, what their goals are for their future in music, and what they expect to gain out of lessons. From there I would discuss what my goals are for lessons in general and how I would approach their situtional needs. I would then like to gain a sense for how they sound through some basic warmups and vocalizations. After a thorough warm up I would have them sing a few pieces that they feel best represent their vocal style.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been singing my entire life and am conservatory trained. I am currently going into my senior year at Manhattan School of Music where I am a classical voice/opera perfromance major. I have had four course levels of aural skills training, theory, piano, and guitar. I am diction fluent in English, French, German, and Italian. I have an extensive perfromance resume in multiple genres including: Blue, Classical, Country, Musical Theatre, Pop, Rock, and Soul.
