Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Everything is broken down into easy steps - verbal, written and visual. The goal is to learn proper techniques to incorporate in to harder projects.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in Arts Management and previous work experience as a product designer/illustrator at Oriental Trading Company.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Projects range from $25-$50 and all DIY kits have technique videos included.
How did you get started teaching?
My first string art class was in Feb 2016 after customers who had ordered my made projects inquired about learning my craft. To date I've had just shy of 11,000 unique students take a class with me.
What types of students have you worked with?
Aged 3-81, male and female. Projects can be adjusted to any skill level and capability.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
In November 2019 I was the featured artist at a large craft show with 40,000 people in attendance. We had hourly workshops where people could come and do a make and take string art project. We had 400+ people sit down to make during the three day event and sold another 600 DIY kits to attendees.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look at their personal work as an example of what you can expect to learn.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
If a person knows what type of learner they are - visual, written instruction, etc. it is a good thing to let an instructor know so that adequate materials can be provided. Also if a student has attempted the medium before it is good to share. My techniques are different so I like the opportunity to explain why I teach something a certain way.
