Susan Shaw Flute
About
Hello!
I'm a professional flutist, teacher of flute, and chamber musician in greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio and offer private instruction in flute, baroque flute, and recorder to students of all ages, abilities, and musical levels at my studio located in Brunswick, Ohio.
If you are focused and want to improve rapidly, then I will push you to help you realize your goal — such as getting into the local youth symphony or applying for music school. If you're looking for a more casual learning experience, I will help you in your pursuit of enjoyable music-making. I love helping my students gain confidence in their playing and musicality. It's not where you start, it's where you end up! Studio hours are flexible - contact me for hours and current rates.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I encourage my students to set goals for themselves, to take risks, to make mistakes, and to learn by imitating the greats via listening assignments. I make frequent use of duets during lessons—they're fun, and improve sight-reading, intonation, ensemble skills and sensitivity to musical phrasing. Last (but not least) I play close attention to the fundamentals of tone production, breathing, vibrato, tonguing and correct positioning. These elements form the foundation for musical artistry and make playing the flute a joy — which is my personal goal for every student I teach.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Master of Music degree, Oberlin Conservatory
Advanced Performance Studies, (Konzertfach) Vienna Academy of Music, Vienna, Austria
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer 30-minute and 60-minute lessons. I do not require a contract, and students may pay either weekly or monthly. I expect consistency in return. I will not hold a lesson time slot open for students who cancel frequently or last minute. Please contact me for current rates. Introductory specials may be in effect.
How did you get started teaching?
I got my first student referral from my own private teacher while I was still in high school and found out that I enjoyed teaching very much. I love helping students gain musical confidence and reach their musical goals.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've taught young beginners (third grade), middle school students, high school students and adults, including senior citizens. I enjoy each and every one of them.
