Hitting & Pitching Training

See a recent interview article in US Insider on Coach Helke here:

https://usinsider.com/baseball-coach-matt-helke-opens-up-about-the-truth-on-getting-better-results-as-a-hitter/

Hitting: Most confuse having a good swing with becoming a good hitter. I can assure you having a good swing is simply one minor step in becoming a good hitter. Most players simply work on mechanics. They take some training and batting practice then hope that all of their work will pay off. That’s NOT going to cut it.

Pitching: I also work with pitchers using the same methodology as I do with hitters. It's not all about mechanics that most pitching coaches teach (even the "top" instructors). Why? because like hitting, there are timing issues that have to be addressed first. It's these timing issues that are the actual source for the majority of mechanical issues. Secondly, players have different physical make-ups. Therefore the "cookie cutter" training the majority of trainers provide tries to have every player pitch the same way. Without taking a players physical make-up into consideration, most trainings actually inhibit a pitchers potential and sets up a player for injury.

"You're not an imitation or clone, so why be trained like one?" While there are similarities, there are differences – you’re an individual. A coach cannot teach and train with "cookie cutter" sessions. It's real simple. When an athlete comes to me, I don't see an incompetent athlete who doesn't know things or needs to be fixed. I see the individual. A very competent athlete who knows a lot more than they think they do. My job is to get them to recognize it and how to specifically get things in the right order so that they can use their tools. It's about progress not perfection. I incorporate both the physical and mental aspects, learn each athlete’s uniqueness while keeping the lessons productive and easy to understand. I am there for guidance, mentorship and instruction, but not to command/demand.

I teach hitting. How to hit a moving ball. Not how to swing at a stationary ball sitting on a batting tee or how to swing at a ball that is soft tossed. There is a big difference. For pitching, I teach how to be a true pitcher - not just a thrower. How to get batters out (and how to get batters to get themselves out). How to reduce arm injuries through proper and simple biomechanics. Proper biomechanics increases velocity and accuracy. I require athletes (and parents) to ask me questions! To me, if a player is not a college or pro player, there are a lot of reasons why at least one parent SHOULD be present during training sessions. But here are the two most obvious ones:

#1: YOU'RE the ones who are paying.

#2: YOU'RE going to be spending time with them after a training session is over.

Number 1, is obvious, but number two is really important. Parents need to be aware of what their player is being taught during sessions.

I'll be spending 45-60 minutes with your player during a session...BUT, you're going home with them. If you understand the information covered during the sessions, you'll be light years ahead to actually help reinforce the new habits we're trying to create!

I mentor players from rec to college athletes. I also video lessons (when applicable) and can show them back to athletes and parents during the session (in real time and slo-motion).

My goal as a coach is not to make the athlete dependent on me like the majority of coaches & trainers do. I educate the athlete (and parents) so they can eventually identify and correct any issues that might arise later on. To have the ability to self-coach, self-adjust and pay attention to the results.

Just one testimony:

“Baseball has really taken an odd turn with summer ball and some of the teaching techniques youth players are getting. It is nice to see your teachings and articles are based on the reality of what works at the collegiate and professional level."

I have always loved the game of baseball. I started coaching in 1992. I want every athlete who wants to play baseball to love the game. I don't want them to leave the game because they think they don't have the athletic ability to play. Too many athletes leave the game because they feel they don't have the ability when what they needed was the opportunity to have someone help them see they do. I am continually keeping up on what works and what doesn’t. I'm always challenging what I know.

Coach Helke is amazing! After the first lesson we already noticed improvement in my son’s hitting. He is patient and able to fully explain to my son at a level that he understands. Coach Helke provides words of encouragement and advice along with visual explanations. We have been lucky to find him as we enjoy how personable and thorough he is.

Coach Matt Helke is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the game of baseball. He coached my son and has provided private instruction to him for the past two years. His passion for the game and excitement to share knowledge and pass that on to youth is refreshing. Matt also inspires his athletes to be leaders and he focuses on the mental aspect of the game as much as the physical skills - which is so very important. He is just an amazing person with such a talented disposition that makes him an amazing coach.

I also work with pitchers using the same methodology as I do with hitters.  It's not all about mechanics that most pitching coaches teach (even the "top" instructors). Why? becasue like hitting, there are timing issues that have to be addressed first.  It's these timing issues that are the actual source for the majority of mechanincal issues.

When working with a new student, I first ask what they want to get out of having lessons.  I ask what they feel they need to work on. Then we do an assessment. From there we would discuss a brief plan for each lesson. As a student progresses, the lessons could change a bit.  I encourage to always ask questions.

Players must master the basic movements before moving forward. If a player can’t master the simple movements, how are they going to manage more advanced movements?

This applies to both hitting and pitching instruction. Players always want more. Pitchers want the ‘good stuff’ and batters want to “crush” the ball. But sadly, most are struggling with the basics and don’t even realize it.  Players and parents see symptoms (and most instructors) and think it’s the issue when it’s not. If you’re familiar with hitting and pitching mechanics at any level, you understand that the slightest change results in MAJOR changes later in their swing or delivery.

Make no mistake, this isn’t cookie cutter training. The hitting and pitching training provided are the keys to a player’s success because they are specifically designed, laser focused, to a player’s individual issue/ need. Sadly, most instruction that is offered out there have players do countless non-functional drills. Those 1,000’s of hitting and pitching drills only mess with a player’s mechanics, wastes time, money and never solves the actual issue.

The key to development is three part.  First, it’s all about having the right information. Second, tailoring a program that is understandable and specific to a player’s strengths, weaknesses, baseball knowledge, mindset and development. (My philosophy to training is "No athlete is a clone and should not train that way"). Third, effort on the player’s part.

So, where do you go from here? Initially it requires you taking a step back from the traditional training mindset you’ve been brain-washed into believing is actually true and realize it’s much easier than the “experts” want you to believe.  This training empowers players. It doesn’t make them dependent on a coach.

I have worked with players who were just starting out in baseball to top college players.
One size doesn’t fit all Why are there so many hitting and pitching coaches but so few good hitters or pitchers? Players go to a pitching or hitting coach for a real solution, not to be thrown into some “one size fits all” cookie-cutter program. The coach is copying from social media or using old, outdated trainings that have been done since the 1960’s or before. Of which, most of these trainings have no scientific backing. They are just theories and philosophies that have been blindly accepted throughout the years. Here's how the story goes: 1. A player or parent looks for training 2. They look up local pitching or hitting training 3.Most coaches uses their playing career as credentials. (Never a good sign) 4. The player or parent thinks the coach must know what he's doing since he played or coached in college, the minor’s or was a pro. (Wrong) 5. "Pro" pitching or hitting coaches get their program mostly from how they were trained – perpetuating the old, outdated, “one size fits all” training methods. No thought or effort to tailor a program specific to your players abilities, physical or mental make-up. Since the majority of coaches force athletes into a single mold, the athlete doesn’t reach their full potential.
