Beth Kagel, Photography Instructor
About
I love photography. I started out in a beginners photography class back when people used film. This inital interest became my way of expressing who I was. I went art school to study photography in New York and finished my undergraduate degree at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. While I was in school I worked as an intern in studios and darkrooms. I started teaching college students in Chicago for several years after I graduated.
When I moved to California I was really excited about the integration of technology and education. I got my Masters degree in online learning. More than anything else I wanted kids to get excited about using digital technology to explore their creativity. I started teaching summer camps for children, working in an elementary school computer lab, and producing lesson plans for teachers to use in their classrooms.
After moving to Columbus I continued to teach technology classes to adults and children. Working with the Cameras for Kids Foundation in Columbus still is one of my favorite teaching experiences.
What if I told you that you can use your smartphone right now to produce amazing holiday photographs, vacation photos and everything in between? It’s really true and the secret doesn’t lie in using a bunch of apps to get that “perfect shot”. It isn’t about the apps or the filters. Those things are important and what’s even more important is the art of framing that shot in your phone the best way possible to get the best photo.
When you work with me you will learn that the secret to a great photograph is how you see it before you even take it. I can’t wait to show you how to take amazing photos with your smart phone.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I meet with my student online or in person and talk about what I can offer them based on their interest. If a student was interested in learning how to take better portraits for family get togethers I would help them with some specific projects before the big event, get together. If they wanted to take some great vacation photos I would help them with specific projects they can do before they go on vacation. Practice is key when it comes to getting that great shot.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BFA in Photography from The School Of The Art Institute of Chicago. The School Of The Art Institute of Chicago is one the oldest and well known art schools in America.
I also have a Master's Degree in online learning and have worked as a freelance web designer.
