About

You may not know this - or never stopped to think about it - but two people can pick up the same exact guitar, plug it into the exact same amp, strum the same chord, but achieve different results.

Additionally, a person who has never played an instrument and has zero understanding of music theory can't tell you how to play their favorite song, but chances are they can tell if you're playing it wrong.

These concepts are why music is the universal language. In the first scenario: no two people will ever have identical voices and use identical vocabulary. In the second: even if a person doesn't understand the language you're speaking they will still be able to determine the emotion(s) you express.

I don't just teach how to play guitar or how to make music, I teach my students what they really want to know: how to develop the skills they need to express themselves through music.

My goal with every lesson is to send my student on their way confident they possess the knowledge, resources, and capability to make meaningful and noticeable improvement in their abilities that will keep them encouraged until long after they have far surpassed their goals.

So, if you're ready, I can give you a quick jumpstart to your abilities or, together, we can carefully craft a learning plan that will have you blowing away your own expectations in no time.

Frequently asked questions

After gaining an understanding of my students current abilities and what their goals are, I develop a lesson plan so that each student is prepared to exceed their goals and expectations. If a student only wants a couple lessons it's about providing as many resources and as much knowledge as possible so they may go forth and conquer on their own. A student that desires a carefully organized and goal-oriented long term mentorship will have a lesson plan built based on their individual preference. Establishing strengths and weaknesses, goals, commitment level, style, and much more will influence the learning approach of each student.
I've spent over 20 years playing guitar and bass with hundreds of hours of lessons and other learning as it pertains to music theory. Most importantly I understand what tends to encourage people to stick with continuing to learn guitar and how to avoid feeling your progress has stagnated. I've battled through the frustration and learned first-hand how to keep the excitement throughout your time spent learning.

My target is $50/hr, but will rarely turn away a student if they cannot afford it and I'm always willing to provide some instruction regardless of budget.

I've always loved to help people and share my knowledge with others. I've always had a habit of making note of the things that make you go: "I wish someone would have told me that when I was starting out" and that has led me to develop a teaching style that gives my students the best chance at success. Achieving a noticeable improvement in my skills is what I've found helped me to stick with learning certain topics, so I strive to provide my students the same.
Mostly friends through out the years but I do have two kids whom I taught starting at age 4 or so and my oldest is now 15. So I've worked with just about all ages up to my age (34), but happy to work with any age.
Not sure what they mean by this .. but I do love going to any event involving live music
If you ever get even the slightest feeling you could be getting more out of taking a lesson from someone else, definitely give other teachers a try. I know I might not be the right fit for everyone so I encourage trying other teachers. Also, if your teacher doesn't help you set realistic goals or you aren't achieving them, then it's time to move on.
Why do you want to learn this? What do you hope to achieve in 3/6/12 months? How much time should I expect to put in on my own to reach my goals? Are my goals realistic? At what point should we revisit my progress toward my goals? What if I follow your lessons and I don't feel like I'm making the progress I should be? Just some things to think about and possibly ask if you're struggling to make the progress you hoped to or think you should have made.
