About
I'm an advanced classical trumpet player with world-class teaching training from the University of Oregon. I've studied with some of the best brass musicians in the world, and have been fortunate enough to be a featured soloist on each coast. Most importantly for our purposes here, I have experience teaching students from no experience on the trumpet to more advanced graduate students.
My pedagogy centers around the inner game–that is, how one's mindset affects and directly influences one's playing–and the basic principles and structures of Arnold Jacob's "wing and song" pedagogical approach.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I assess where a student is at in terms of basic musical ability and technical facility. From there, I work with the student to craft a game plan whereby they can achieve their goals (product) with the process in mind (process). Trumpet playing is an art, and requires diligence, dedication, but also a sense of wonder, purpose, and creativity. It is not an instrument for the fainthearted. It requires effort! But it's my job to add some ease into the process so you can feel like you're making progress.
I'll go over basic method books and assign homework for the student's practice routine. I'll instruct the student how to play the exercises and what they should prepare for the next lesson, and how to do so. I'll assign etudes when the student is ready, but we'll wait on pieces as my trumpet teacher said, "pieces are for when you're ready to perform." If you want to do a Zoom performance for your friends and family, then we can get started doing that!
