Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During our first lesson, I try to ask questions about what the student's interests in music are, what they hope to get out of the lessons, and what their current muisc theory and instrument knowledge base is. Some students already have a clear defined goal such as apllying for scholarships or preparing for recitals, whereas others are just seeing if this could be a fun hobby. Both are great reasons, and it helps me design lessons that will most benifit the student

How did you get started teaching?
When I was a freshmen in college, I know I wanted to do something involving music. In my sophomore year, I took an introductory education course, which got me visiting nearby schools and their music departments. I got to breifly lead a beggining band through one of their rehearsals, and made my decision then to become a music educator.
What types of students have you worked with?
ages 5-50, ranging from piano to drums to guitar to brass instruments (trumpet tuba trombone french horn baritone euphonium). Classical, Jazz, Rock, etc.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
During the pandemic/Covid, I have been giving lessons using Zoom. I also have done recital via zoom, and it's so neat to have family and relatives join the recital from all over the country.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure the teacher's teaching style best matches your learning style.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do you want to learn by rote, or learn how to teach yourself more? How much guidance or feedback to you want/expect from the teacher? How often would I need a lesson to make sure I am staying on track and checking my work?
