Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students start working with charcoal pencils and studying light and shadow. They continue in the next class learning pen and ink drawing and the various strokes and techniques for about a month. Then into soft pastel then oil pastel, color pencil, and eventually watercolor, gouache and acrylic painting. Students will learn perspective, landscape, portraits, animals, figure drawing.
I also offer scupture classes working with polymerclays, self-hardening clays, wire sculpture, found object compositions, plaster and wood.
Each student works at their own pace. Instruction is based on the student's age and level of experience. Classes are not grouped by age
or ability. No experience is necessary.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BS in Art Education from Kutztown. I taught in public school inthe Pittsburgh area for three years and returned to the Philadelphia area to
teach one more year in public school. I then switched to become a graphic artist for a major insurance company in Philadelphia for 5 years.

All types, all ages, I take students from age 9 to 99.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher who works in and teaches lots of different media and subject areas. Explore new media.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The student should determine what is most interesting to him/her in subject matter, i.e. animals, portraits, landscapes, etc. What medium do they want to learn or try. Is art being considered as a career?
