About

I enjoy working with flutists at all stages of their careers, whether the joy of discovery for the beginner, or the satisfaction in self-expression and mastery of technique for the advanced player. My teaching has been recognized with the PA Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year award.

I earned Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Flute at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. As a performer, I have performed solo recitals, concerti and as principal flute with a number of orchestras, including 45 year tenure as Principal Flute of the Erie Philharmonic.

While I love performing, the other key to musical happiness in sharing the joy of music with younger students!

    Frequently asked questions

For brand new players, we work with producing sound on the headjoint first, and developing concepts such as counting rhythm, playing tunes and fun effects on the headjoint. If you are not a beginner, I will want you to bring to your first lesson music that you have played, or are playing in school, or on your own. We will start with music that you already own, and expand to more titles that will help you.

My first teaching was at age 14, when my junior high music director recommended that I teach a younger student who needed beginning flute lessons, in the band room after school. I think I was paid 50 cents per lesson by the student- in those days when babysitting rate was typically 35 or 50 cents an hour! I resumed teaching a few students when I was a senior in high school and those lessons took place in my parents’ living room; the students were referred to me by my own flute teacher, Mrs Eagle. I continued teaching a few private students when at Indiana University and when working on my Masters degree I was appointed an Associate Instructor of Flute for the IU Jacobs School of Music. I have taught private flute lessons ever since, to school aged children and teens, to college students, and to adults wishing to improve their skills.

Hearing the youth orchestra’s performance and enjoying the first flute player’s beautifully played solo lines. She has studied with me for three years. The other joy is hearing the progress in one of my eighth grade student’s tone and playing skills!
