About

I'm a guitarist, composer, and instructor with 10+ years of experience. While I specialize in rock/metal styles, I'm also comfortable in jazz, electronic and orchestral settings. My Instagram serves as a hub for most of my musical activity, but my solo project Joelaul (featuring artists such as Jake Howsam Lowe of Plini) can be found on any streaming platform! I think music is one of our most powerful tools for connection, and when it comes to my students and supporters, nurturing that connection is the most important thing. Let's hang!

I get to communicate and explore what I'm most passionate about while leading others toward that passion in the process.

Frequently asked questions

I will gauge a student's understanding of core concepts of theory and technique and hear out their interests to help determine their path, but ultimately I like to keep things casual and leave the direction up to the student.

I am primarily self-educated as a guitarist and composer, which I believe has allowed me to hone a unique style and an ethos of focusing on what matters most. Learning never ends, and much of mine has been achieved while teaching! I am only the sum of the perspectives I've gained from others, and my students are no exception.

I charge a fixed rate for a single 1 hour lesson, as well as a discounted rate for set of weekly lessons if the student is willing to commit to at least three. I am always willing to be flexible with pricing if the student needs it.

In part thanks to the encouragement of my peer teachers, I started giving online lessons when I noticed the opportunity to further connect with my audience and help them understand my musical approach.

I mostly work with intermediate and advanced students, as my stylistic focus - progressive metal - tends to attract players in that experience range. That said, I am more than capable of teaching beginners!

Caught Animals as Leaders and Intervals in NYC back in August and got to talk with the artists for a bit after the show! I'm not a huge show-goer but I had the incentive of meeting a close online friend who would be visiting the city that day. The day after, a Guitar Center associate walked past us in the store where we were playing and said "that's a lot of metal coming out of that little amp". Don't think I've received a better compliment.

Look for someone who will treat you as an equal, be honest about what they don't know, and keep you on track.

Is this technique or concept something that will be benefit me to know? Is what I WANT to know the same as what I NEED to know?
