About

I love music, I love teaching, and I have been involved in many areas of music-making and education for a very long time - over 35 years. I love literally all kinds of music - every genre, style and historical period. I am very student-centered: I want to meet the needs, interests and goals of each student. I am constantly learning myself, including from my students, as well as from my constant listening, reading and studying. I am a full-time performing, songwriting and recording musician, and I work as a teaching artist doing songwriting residencies in schools.

David is a wonderful teacher. I’ve taken 4 music appreciation classes with him and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them all. His classes are well-planned, well-researched, and fun!!! David communicates with his students in terms they can understand and always allows adequate time for questions and discussion. In addition to sharing examples of recorded music with the class, he sometimes pulls out his guitar and plays/sings the songs himself. I am impressed with David’s depth of knowledge across many genre’s of music. His enthusiasm for sharing music (as well as the stories behind the composers and musicians who create and perform it) is genuine. Without hesitation, I can recommend taking one of David’s classes and look forward to taking more of them myself.

I took a course with David Heitler Klevans on late 20th century rock & roll and pop music and found it instructive and fun thanks to the open high energy classroom that David creates. Not only does he know the music inside-out, but he links it effectively to the relevant historical moment. The result is thought provoking and engaging for participants. David delivers for students with a sharp intelligence and a quiet passion for the world of music.

I have taken several courses with David ranging from Classical Music to pop music of the sixties. I cannot say enough about his mastery of his subjects, enthusiasm, ability to convey concepts, and to make students comfortable with questions and responses. He is truly an incredible teacher and musician. Ive observed him with children as well and they respond enthusiastically to his lessons.

David is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about music history, composition, singer/songwriters, and popular music of all genres. It is obvious he puts a lot of effort into preparing for each class. His handouts are helpful gems with lyrics, historical milestones, lists of greatest hits of the day, etc. He prepares a play list with the best version of each piece he wants to feature and is sure to not waste our time with the boring parts. He follows up with each class by sending additional playlists and answers to any questions that came up during the class. Sometimes he invites special guests to play for the class as he is well-connected to many talented performers touring in this area. He is punctual and uses the class time efficiently. He has clearly thought about the topic a lot and has opinions about things but is open to hearing what each student has to say. I highly recommend David as a teacher!

Frequently asked questions

I always start by finding out what a new student wants to get out of our work together, and what kind of experience they have.  I don't come in with a rigid curriculum - I want to start from the students' level, tastes and goals and go from there.  I create lessons tailored to the particular student.

I have a Bachelor's degree in music composition from Oberlin Conservatory, and I have also taken graduate school courses in music education, including Orff certification classes level I & II.  I have been teaching music classes and lessons for over 35 years - I started when I was a high school student.  I was a music teacher in PS-8th grade schools for 6 years, and I have also taught music at various music schools (including Settlement Music School) and early childhood settings.  I have been a full-time performer, songwriter and recording artist for 22 years.  I also do work as a teaching artist, conducting songwriting residencies in schools.  In the last few years, I have been teaching music appreciation classes for various continuing education programs, including Temple University Ambler, Cheltenham Township Adult School, and Mt. Airy Learning Tree.

$30 for 1/2 hr.; $50 for 1 hour

I have worked with children as young as 3 years old up through seniors and every age in between.  I have taught individuals and classes, in urban, rural and suburban settings.  I have worked with a wide diversity of students in many categories, including a couple of high school exchange students from China.
