About

I love the guitar and thanks to the guitar my life has been so much richer in so many ways! So I try to teach you in a way that fits your life and make you want to play music as a part of your life.

I teach both standard notation and/or tablature, folk (chords to accompany songs) as well as classical guitar (melody and accompaniment), blues and Spanish guitar. Whenever possible I offer ensembles and opportunities to play with others. I've been teaching and playing for 35 y.

I've taught classroom music for a long time so I just love working one on one.

Marlis was my music teacher in elementary school where she introduced me to the art of playing music with a variety of instruments including guitar, voice, piano, recorder, and drums. I studied guitar with her for about 4 years and since then music has played a massive part in my life. I now regularly perform music and I often remind myself of Marliss lessons from my childhood to improve my playing. Marlis is kind, skilled, experienced, passionate, and infectiously enthusiastic. If youre looking for a teacher that will teach you not only guitar technique but also the joy of creating music look no further.

I began taking lessons when I was ~7 years old and have vivid memories of Marlis gently challenging me, easily navigating my stubbornness and encouraging me with increasingly interesting songs and scales. I am still playing guitar 20 years later and fondly look back to those lessons. I cannot begin to explain the importance Marlis has had on my guitar playing and I highly recommend her as a teacher.

I wish I had such an extraordinary teacher when I was a kid learning flute. I had 4 teachers, all professional players, including the first chair of the Pittsburg orchestra and shes the best! Marlis makes learning the guitar fun-and this means I want to practice! She is encouraging and supportive, while also stretching me. She is very observant of my flaws in technique and not only gently corrects my mistakes, but shows me different ways to practice successfully. She also helps me think about playing with musicality. Im retired, but she also has young students. Her fee is very reasonable, and her schedule flexible. BTW, she teaches within walking distance of the Elkins Park rail station.

Maralis is very patient. That patience was very important to me a newer musician. Also she allowed me to be a part of choosing how i wanted to be taught and songs i would prefer to learn. Her home is peaceful and delightful like her kind spirit. Ps, she is also quite a fine musician and her young students play fabulously!

Frequently asked questions

First find out what you know about music and what your goals are. That gives us a starting point.
Then building skills from there in increments that will allow you to be successful, challenged and will motivate you to practice.

I was an elementary music teacher for many years and know how to break things down which is a very helpful strategy. I have also played with many other players and learned different styles and approaches beyond my formal guitar training.
