Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson is evaluative. I learn where the student is their progress, diagnose areas needing immediate correction, and take time to learn about the student's learning style so that I can be most effective as the instructor.

Master of Science in Education
30 post-graduate credits in music and education

How did you get started teaching?
I was inspired to become a teacher from my experiences with my own middle school band director.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages from beginner to advanced, and across many different learning styles and abilities.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Thoroughly check the instructor's qualifications. There are many who decide that they can "teach" because they play the instrument. But at the core of teaching is "do no harm." One may be able to play, but may fail to know proper pedagogy and instructional techniques to help the student succeed. I have encountered many students who were failed by such so called instructors, and for whom I had to start from the beginning to undo damages done that had hindered the students.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The student should consider how they learn best, and share this so that the teacher can present lessons that help the student understand the lesson material as well as achieve success in playing the instrument. A good teacher should be able to properly diagnose concerns in the student's instrument playing without having to be told.
